Textbook: A Corpus Approach for Classroom Use

Corpus Approach: 

• Vocabulary:  

  • The vocabulary follows the New General Service (NGSL) high-frequency word list. 

  • The 2,809 words of the NGSL cover 92%  of General English. 

• Reading:

  • The intensive reading passages are levelled using the NGSL online Text Profilier.

  • Low frequency words are pre-taught.

Classroom Use: 

• Practical

  • The coursebook is written by a teacher, for teachers, and is intended for classroom use. It is designed, not for self-study, but for practical implimentation.

  • It is specifically designed for pair work.

• Speaking: 

  • The speaking is built on the writing activities which are built on the worksheet activities. Everything is scaffolded. When your students arrive at the speaking exercises, they will know what to do. 

  • The topics follow a communicative approach based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is a scale of measuring communicative compitence  and was developed by the Council of Europe.

• Writing: 

  • The writing is based on the worksheets, so when your students arrive at the writing exercises, they will know what to do and what to write

  • Everything part of the coursebook is slowly scaffolded.

• Grammar: 

  • The coursebook focuses on teaching high-frequency grammar points which are essential for communication. The grammar points build on one another and reinforce each other. 

  • Grammar exercises are based on the reading passages, so students will know what to do. 

• Listening:

  • Listening passages follow the same structure as writing exercises, so students know what to do.

  • Classroom focused: Ample opportunities for listening provided by both the instructor and through peer-to-peer interaction.
