History and Scope of the Standard
The IEC standard 61089 was first published in 1991, and is derived from the original bilingual publication by leaving out all French-language pages. The standard is based on the documents prepared by IEC Technical Committee No. 7: Bare aluminium conductors. The standard has been revised and updated several times since its first edition, and the latest version is from 2017.
The standard applies to round wire concentric lay stranded conductors with a nominal cross-sectional area not exceeding 3 000 mm, and a nominal diameter not exceeding 100 mm. The standard does not cover conductors for telecommunication purposes, or conductors with special properties, such as superconductivity, corrosion resistance, etc. The standard also does not specify the design criteria or installation methods for the conductors.
Designation System and Definitions
The standard provides a designation system for the conductors, which consists of a code letter followed by a number. The code letter indicates the material of the conductor, and the number indicates the nominal cross-sectional area in square millimetres. For example, ACSR 240/40 means an aluminium conductor steel-reinforced with a total cross-sectional area of 240 mm and a steel core area of 40 mm. The standard also defines various terms related to the conductors, such as lay ratio, lay direction, joint, grease, etc.
Requirements for Stranded Conductors
The standard specifies the requirements for the material, conductor sizes, surface, stranding, joints, linear density, mass per unit length and conductor strength of the stranded conductors. The material of the conductor shall comply with the relevant IEC standards for each metal or alloy. The conductor sizes shall be selected from the recommended values given in Annex D of the standard. The surface of the conductor shall be smooth and free from defects that may impair its performance. The stranding of the conductor shall be uniform and regular, and the lay ratio shall be within the specified limits. The joints in the conductor shall be made by welding or brazing, and shall be located at least one metre from the end of a coil or reel. The linear density and mass per unit length of the conductor shall be calculated from the nominal cross-sectional areas and densities of each component. The conductor strength shall be determined by tensile tests on samples taken from each coil or reel.
Tests
The standard classifies the tests on the stranded conductors into three categories: type tests, sample tests and inspection tests. Type tests are performed to verify that the conductor complies with the specified requirements for material composition, electrical resistance, stress-strain behaviour, etc. Sample tests are performed to verify that each coil or reel of conductor complies with the specified requirements for linear density, mass per unit length, conductor strength, etc. Inspection tests are performed to verify that each length of conductor complies with the specified requirements for surface condition, stranding, joints, etc. The standard also specifies the test methods, sample sizes and lengths, acceptance criteria and test reports for each category of tests.

Packaging and Marking
The standard specifies the packaging and marking requirements for the stranded conductors. The conductors shall be packed in coils or reels that are suitable for transportation and storage. Each coil or reel shall be marked with a label that contains information such as: manufacturer's name or trademark; designation system; nominal cross-sectional area; nominal diameter; nominal length; mass; date of manufacture; lot number; etc. Each length of conductor shall also be marked at intervals not exceeding one metre with information such as: manufacturer's name or trademark; designation system; nominal cross-sectional area; etc.
Annexes
The standard includes five informative annexes that provide additional information on the stranded conductors. Annex A lists the information to be supplied by the purchaser when ordering the conductors. Annex B describes the stress-strain test method for determining the modulus of elasticity and permanent elongation of the conductors. Annex C gives the nominal mass of grease for greased conductors. Annex D recommends the conductor sizes and tables of conductor properties for various types of conductors. Annex E gives an example of a test report for type tests.
