The research work of our group IDEAS has been centered on solid state diffusion in metallic alloys. The main topics of research include a) understanding the effect of compositional complexity on diffusion b) microstructure-diffusion correlation c) grain boundary diffusion in polycrystalline solids d) oxidation behaviour in multicomponent alloys e) phase equilibria in multicomponent alloys and f) phase stability of mechanically alloyed multicomponent alloys. We extensively utilise diffusion-couple techniques to understand the phase evolution at dissimilar metal interfaces and extract concentration dependent diffusivities. Oxidation experiments are carried out under isothermal conditions with focus on linking mechanisms and microstructure. The materials of interest include Ni based alloys, complex concentrated alloys, Al alloys and shape memory alloys. Our group consists of 9 PhD students and 5 Master’s students. Our current research work is primarily carried out at IIT Hyderabad and through national collaborations with organizations such as ARCI, ISRO, DMRL, DYSL and IGCAR, and Institutes such as IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore. The part of diffusion work involving radiotracer measurements has been in collaboration with Prof. Sergiy Divinski, at the University of Muenster, Germany.
