L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
R: Amen.
L: My Lord Jesus Christ, you walked this road of suffering even to your death. You did this for me. And yet I have so often failed in the love of you, by my sins. Now I want to love you with all my heart and turn away from everything that offends you. Pardon me, my God. Allow me to follow you on this journey. You went out to die for the love of me. Give me the courage and the faith to be able to die with the love of you, whenever the right time comes. I want to live and die always united to you.
R: Amen.
ACT OF CONTRITION
R: O my God, I am sorry and beg pardon for all my sins, and detest them above all things, because they deserve your dreadful punishments, because they have crucified my loving Saviour Jesus Christ, and most of all because they offend your infinite goodness; and I firmly resolve, by the help of your grace, never to offend you again, and carefully to avoid the occasions of sin. Amen
L: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
R: Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
L: The soldiers flogged Jesus mercilessly and crowned Him with thorns. Instead of pitying His condition, the elders persuaded the people to shout "Crucify him." And the Governor, because of fear, condemned Jesus to public execution, although he was innocent.
R: My innocent Saviour, it was not Pilate only. No. It is my sins also that sentenced you to die. I am very sorry for my sins. Let me stay united with you always in future.

Hail Mary …

L: Have mercy on us O Lord.
R: Have mercy on us.
R: May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
L: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
R: Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
L: They brought the heavy, rough cross and told Jesus to take it and start carrying it. Jesus takes the cross willingly because this is the way He will redeem us.
R: My loving Redeemer, this Cross is not your own. It is ours. By this, you willingly take up the suffering and pain of this hard, sinful world upon yourself. You change the meaning of it all to love. I also will have my cross to carry. Following you, I do not want to refuse it. But sometimes I am afraid. Please give me some of your courage to carry my cross willingly and lovingly, as you did, even to the hour of my death.

R: Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
L: Jesus was a strong man. But He had been made weak by hunger and loss of blood. He was hardly able to walk. He stumbled and fell under the heavy cross. Nevertheless, He stood up again and took the courage to go on.
R: My Jesus, it is not only the weight of the cross but the weight of our sins, which made you fall. I myself have fallen, by my own fault and weakness, into sin. Nevertheless, with the help of your courage, I will stand up again and continue on the right road.
Our Father …

L: Mary was there in Jerusalem that day, and she even saw her own son being led through the crowded streets to a shameful execution. Nobody but a good mother can begin to understand what Mary felt that day. For a short moment Jesus looked at her in the crowd, and Mary looked at her Son.
R: My most loving Jesus, how great was the sorrow you felt for your poor mother! Give me the blessing of honouring and loving her all the days of my life. And you, my Queen and my Mother ask God to let me never forget your Son and the things that He endured for me.

L: When they saw that Jesus was very weak, they had no pity on Him. But they thought perhaps He would die before they had time to crucify Him. So, they told one stranger, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross behind our Lord. Simon refused. But he had to do it, by force. Afterwards, when he saw the kind of person that Jesus was, Simon was glad to help Him.
R: My beloved Saviour, I do not want to refuse the cross as Simon did. I want to take it, whatever my cross will be, especially the cross of my own death. You died for the love of me; I want to be able to die for the love of you. Help me always to live and to die in your love.

L: A woman named Veronica was there in the crowd. She saw Jesus struggling along; His face covered with sweat and blood. Forgetting all fear, she pushed her way through the mocking crowd and the cruel soldiers. And she gently wiped his face with a cloth. His face remained like a picture on the cloth, ever after.
R: O my Jesus, I am glad that Veronica was there that day. She had a kind heart and a brave heart. She did not mind the crowd or "What will they say?" She did not mind the soldiers, or "What will they do to me?" Whenever I see a human being in need of encouragement, please help me to be kind and brave like Veronica. By that, I will become more like you. For we are all made in your image and likeness.

L: Jesus continued to struggle on, in the heat of the afternoon. Although He was willing to continue, His body was so weak that He fell down once again on the street. The soldiers beat him wickedly. But it was not by force, it was by His own will and His love for His Father and for human beings that He stood up again and walked slowly forward.
R: My gentle Jesus, how many times you have pardoned me! And how many times I have fallen again! I do not want to offend you ever again. Please give me the strength to be faithful always. When I am tempted to fall, may I always come quickly to you for your help.

L: Some women of Jerusalem, who were not part of the stupid and heartless mob, saw Jesus passing by. These women behaved like human beings. They wept when they saw the pitiable condition of this stranger. Jesus stopped and spoke to them: "Weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children."
R: My Jesus, I too must be sorry for your condition; I cannot help it when I think of it. But I must be even more sorry for my own behaviour, and for the pain that I have helped to cause you, by my sins.

L: By this time, Jesus had almost reached the hill of Calvary. But before He could reach it, He fell down again. He fell helplessly and painfully on the stony ground. I can never
R: O, my Jesus, sometimes I fall so badly that I almost lose hope. I think I can never stand up again. I think I can never be of any good. And indeed without your help, I am helpless. But I can do all things if you give me strength.

L: When they came to the top of Calvary, the executioners pulled off every cloth from the wounded body of Jesus. They pulled so roughly that the skin came away with the cloth, where it was sticking by blood. When they were finished, Jesus had to stand naked and bleeding in a public place.
R: O my innocent Saviour, you had to endure this pain and disgrace because of our disgraceful deeds of shame. Indeed, I am ashamed of many things myself. But shame is no use without true repentance. Sometimes I am even ashamed to be seen doing good. Teach me how to be free from useless shame and to have the courage to do good and turn away from evil.

L: For three hours, Jesus hung from the nails in His hands and feet. No angry word came from Him. He pardoned His murderers. He promised Heaven to the repentant thief. He endured everything with patience. At last, He gave His soul to God: He bowed His head and died.
R: O my Jesus, I bow my head in thankfulness before the cross on which you died for love of me. I too must die one day. But now I am not so afraid again. Your death has changed the meaning of life, and the meaning of death, for us human beings. With your power, I am able to give my soul joyfully to God when my time comes. Be with me on that day and always.

L: After Jesus died, a soldier made sure of his death by driving a spear into His heart. The dead body of our Saviour hung on the cross. Two friends took it down and Mary took her Son into her arms, the same child who was born to her at Bethlehem.
R: O Mary, mother of sorrows, please, for love of this your Son, accept me also as your child. Pray to Him for me, now and at the hour of my own death. O my Queen and Mother, never let me sin again! Amen.

R: Because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
L: A few friends who remained there took Jesus gently from His mother and laid Him in a new tomb in a rock nearby. They closed the grave and all went sorrowfully away.
R: O my buried Jesus, this looked like the end of hope. Evil conquered you. But thanks be to God, this was not the end. You conquered even the grave. And this you have done not for yourself but for us. Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Lord Jesus come in glory! Let us also rise glorious with you to be always united with you in Heaven, to praise and love God forever, with Mary and all the saints.

Hail Mary …
Glory be to the Father …
L: Have mercy on us O Lord.
R: Have mercy on us.

PRAYER BEFORE THE CRUCIFIX
L: Dear Jesus, as I follow and study Your life from the time of Your condemnation until Your Crucifixion and death, it is also a time to review my own life and ask for help in those areas where I have not done well. When I find areas where I need help, let me not become discouraged or give in to despair, but rather turn to You as a child to a parent, and humbly ask for Your divine help and guidance. Help me live one day at a time, and never relive the past or worry about the future. Help me accept each day as it comes, and to live it the way that You and I know best. Never let me say, If I had the chance to live it over, I would do this or that. Knowing myself, if I had the chance, I would probably make the same mistakes again. Help me to live each moment to its fullest, and the newness of each moment give me the comfort of soul and peace of mind.
R: Amen
L: For the intentions of the Holy Father and souls in purgatory, let us pray together -
R: Our Father … Hail Mary …
L: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
R: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
BLESSING
P: The Lord be with you.
R: And with your spirit.
P: May Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit
R: Amen.
