About the Institute:
Established on October 1, 1933 as University Department of Chemical Technology (popularly called UDCT) of the University of Bombay (now Mumbai), with the noble intention of advancing India's knowledge reserves in chemical science and technology, the Institute has grown to become a premier (deemed) university devoted to education, training, research and industrial collaboration in chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology and bioprocessing. The then UDCT grew in stature over the years and was granted partial autonomy by the University of Mumbai in 1985, which was taken to the next echelon under the concept of autonomy propagated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Due to its size and spread of activities, it was converted into University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT) on 26th January, 2002 and under the TEQIP of the World Bank it was granted full autonomy in 2004. Upon strong recommendation of the UGC through a peer review process, the autonomous institute status was finally converted in to a Deemed-to-be-University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, on 12 September 2008. Seven convocations have so far taken place in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, 2017 and 2018. Based on its stellar performance over the years, the Government of Maharashtra granted it the Elite Status and Centre of Excellence in the State Assembly on April 20, 2012. This is a singular distinction accorded to any institute in the entire country and speaks volumes about the achievements of the ICT.
Department of Mathematics:
The Department of Mathematics, ICT Mumbai was established in the year 1944. Since its inception, the department has been catering to all the courses related to mathematics, statistics, and computer programming of UG and PG programmes in ICT. The department offers a 2-year M.Sc. programme in "Engineering Mathematics". This programme was started in the academic year 2012-2013 under the UGC INNOVATIVE SCHEMES and is very unique in its nature. The department also has Ph.D. programme in Mathematics covering diverse areas of research including Statistics, Machine Learning, Mathematical Biology, etc.
The community of the department consists of five faculty members, with broad areas of expertise related to mathematics and statistics, and two support staffs. The department has modern and high-level computational facilities, consisting of 50 All-In-One Computers, Two Servers, one workstation, and a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster. All computers are installed with software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, SPSS, R Python and Sagemath etc.
The department has strong research collaborations with other renowned academic institutions and industries. Students are also provided with industrial internship and placements opportunity. The faculty members of the department are members of Board of Studies of several other institutions. The department regularly arranges workshops, conferences, and seminars for students and teachers of other colleges. Faculties are also engaged in various training programmes in mathematics and statistics across the country.
The Department of Mathematics has research expertise mainly in the areas of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Mathematical Modeling, Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer in Newtonian Non-Newtonian Fluids, Singular Perturbation Theory, Optimization Techniques, Statistical Analysis, Data Analysis, Mathematical Biology, Species Distribution Modeling, Applied Functional Analysis, Differential Equations, and Mathematical Pedagogy.
About S.I.W.S College:
The SIWS, N. R. Swamy College of Commerce & Economics was established in 1980 and Smt. Thirumalai College of Science was established in 1990 under the SIWS Educational Institutions. The SIWS colleges are “Autonomous” and “re-accredited” with an “A” grade in the third cycle of NAAC. The college is located in Wadala, and is well connected to reach through bus and local train services in Mumbai. The college offers graduate and postgraduate courses in Commerce and Science streams. The vision of SIWS colleges is to continually strive to respond to realities and social changes through knowledge empowerment. This is achieved through the Motto of SIWS “Vidya Dhnam Sarva Dhanat Pradhanam” in pursuance of its vision. SIWS produces socially responsible and intellectually capable citizens of India. The campus has an environment of cultural diversity adapting to the emerging challenges of the global community. The Department of Mathematics offers courses in Science and Commerce and organizes several academic activities such as Invited talks by eminent Mathematicians and interactions with Research Scholars of IITB to motivate students for higher studies. The faculty members are actively involved in research in Geometry, Complex Analysis and Ancient Indian Mathematics and have published papers in reputed international Journals. The department has an ongoing research project sanctioned by NBHM in Riemann surfaces.
