Communication Goal: naming and describing sports.
Grammar Focus: Present Simple, Present Continuous.
Recycled Language: football, basketball, tennis, hockey, rugby.
Target Students: 14 year-old - Pre-Intermediate level (24 students)
Warmer (10 minutes)
The Teacher will play a guessing game with students. She will show a sport image only partially and students have to guesss what is under. If students can't guess the sport she will continue showing the image little by little until they can recognize it. The she will write the students' answers on ther whiteboard. The images used will be from the recycled list.
The Teacher will show students the newspaper Skysport and she will guide them so they can then, in groups of four, explore the website on their own.
She will ask students to find in the newspaper different sports words.
In groups, they will have to make a list of the words they find. Then they will share their findings with the rest of the group.
The Teacher will show students how to use the dictionary online to find out more information about each sport.
First, each group will have to create a presentation on sports using all the words they've gathered (e.g powerpoint, genially, etc). They should write what they are and describe them.
Then, they will create a short activity choosing any of the availble options provided by the webpage Quizizz.
Warmer (10 minutes)
The Teacher will paste images of different sports and she will write the labels on the whiteboards. She will ask students to match them. Then, they will have to make a simple sentence using that word in Present Simple and Present Continuous.
The teacher will show students an article with an interview from The Guardian newspaper. They will read and analyse its part as a whole class focusing on the questions.
Then she will ask students to play a game in pars. Each pair will have to pretend they are a famous sport person and they will have to ask and answers questions.
The teacher will show students a website to learn how to create questions for an article on wikihow.
With the purpose of giving students extra practise to formulate questions they will work with two quizzes on Present Simple and Present Continuous. from the website EnglishClub.
Finally, students will work in different pairs. Each student will have to choose a sport and a referent athlete from the chosen sport. Then they will have to come up with questions to ask their peers pretending to be a journalist writing an article for a newspaper. Everyone will write the questions in written and they will share them with the class. The final part of the lesson will be "acting out" the parts of the journalist and the person being interviewed.
