Pr.Mohamed Jebbar TEACHER RESEARCHER UNIVERSITE DE BRETAGNE OCCIDENTALE BREST FRANCE
Title: Extremophiles and extreme environments are source of unkwnon (macro)molecules with potential biotechnological applications
Pr. Mohamed Jebbar is a research professor at the University of Western Brittany (UBO) and previously, Associate Professor assigned to the University of Rennes 1 in France. He is a microbiologist, specialist in microorganisms in deep ocean environments with extreme conditions. Prof. Mohamed Jebbar has over 20 years of experience in microbial physiology and genetics. For more than a decade, his scientific work has focused on the osmoprotective effect on bacteria facing hyperosmotic stress. He identified the genes involved in the transport and degradation of osmolytes and elucidated the mechanism of osmoprotection, without accumulation, induced by the presence of osmolyte in Sinorhizobium meliloti. He then joined the University of Brest (UBO) in September 2007 as a Research Professor at UBO, within the Laboratory of Microbiology of Extreme Environments (LM2E) UMR 6197 (CNRS-UBO-Ifremer). Since 2007, he has reoriented his research activity towards the study of the adaptation to high hydrostatic pressure of hyperthermophilic microorganisms from deep hydrothermal vents. He is currently the Deputy Director of the Extreme Environments Microbiology Laboratory and teaches biochemistry and microbiology at the five levels of undergraduate and masters students. At the doctoral level, he is responsible for the thesis jury and the annual organization of the competition for the Doctoral School of Marine Sciences (EDSM: ED 156) of the SDV disciplinary axis. Currently, his research focuses on the characterization of the mechanisms (piezophilia) developed by deep-sea prokaryotes to cope with high hydrostatic pressures. He focuses on functional genomics (transcriptomics and proteomics) to understand adaptation to high hydrostatic pressure at the level of gene expression. He has participated in global programs for sequencing the genomes of hyperthermophilic piezophilic prokaryotes (Marinitoga piezophila, Thermococcus barophilus and Pyrococcus yayanosii).
