The Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The erstwhile Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras formed the core of the Bharathiar University, which was functioning at Coimbatore before 1982. University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized Bharathiar University in 1985 for grants. The University has 39 Departments, offering 54 post-graduate programs besides offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs. The University is an affiliating University. The jurisdiction of the University covers the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, and The Nilgiris with 133 affiliated colleges.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council have accredited the University with an ‘A’ Grade in the third cycle assessment. Bharathiar University is marching towards becoming a World Class University by garnering a ranking in the International arena. Times Higher Education Young Universities World Ranking ranked our University in the range of 201 to 250. We stand at 13th rank under the category of University and 15th among the top 100 institutions in the MoE’s National Institute Ranking Framework’s (NIRF) ranking. In 2021, Bharathiar University secured a ranking in the range of 801-1000 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Bharathiar University is the only State Arts & Science University to top the list at the National level.
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1978 as the Department of Applied Mathematics in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of the University of Madras. Later in 1982 when Bharathiar University was formed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Department came under Bharathiar University as the Department of Mathematics. In 2002, the Department was recognized by UGC as UGC DRS Centre for Differential Equations & Fluid Dynamics under the Special Assistance Program. Recently it has been upgraded to the third stage of UGC (SAP). The Department offers M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics with more emphasis on Applied Mathematics. The Department conducts various research activities which are fundamental and applied in nature and in particular, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Differential equations, Control theory & Fuzzy mathematics. Currently, the Department has six faculty members in different cadres. The Department is getting a separate library grant of Rs. 6 lakhs every year from the NBHM and we have a good collection of foreign books in our library. The Department has an International standard smart classroom facility to give lectures and seminars. The Department has published more than 1000 research papers in international and national journals. Several of them are published in Science Citation Indexed Journals. Due to this contribution, many of our full-time Ph.D. research scholars have obtained Post Doctoral Fellowships in foreign countries. The faculty members are periodically visiting foreign Universities to carry out research in the frontier areas.
