Karnataka State Library Association (KALA)
The genesis of the Karnataka State Library Association can be traced to its origin in 1962 under the benevolent guidance of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, termed the Father of Library Science in India. For some administrative reasons, it had been defunct for some years and revived in 1989, registered under its present nomenclature. Since its reincarnation, it has been one of the most active state library associations in the country, working towards the progress and development of the library profession. It now has over 650 members and has been conducting programmes on August 12 every year to celebrate Dr. Ranganthan’s birthday as Librarian’s Day, which is officiated by the Government of Karnataka. Every year, the Association is also organising National Library Week, from November 14–20, and arranges lectures and discourses from noted scholars and luminaries drawn from different fields and occupations. Besides, it actively collaborates with the Department of Public Libraries, Government of Karnataka, in all its activities, meetings, and other promotional pursuits, as mandated by the Karnataka Public Libraries Act, 1965.
