Emerging Optimization Problems and Algorithms
Summary: Over the last two decades, nature-inspired stochastic optimization techniques have been widely used to solve a variety of problems in both science and industry. Despite the popularity and impact of such methods, optimization of real-world problems involves addressing a large number of difficulties such as local solutions, multiple objectives, constraints, expensive objective function, noisy objective function, dynamic search space, uncertainties, etc. In this talk, the state-of-the-art and recent advances in addressing such difficulties during optimization will be briefly presented. There will be discussions on the future of research in this area as well.

Convex optimization and Stochastic Gradient Descent as Engine of Deep Learning
Summary: This work will demonstrate the role of optimization techniques in Deep Learning. Earlier basic notion of Gradient Descent algorithm has been demonstrated in the framework of largely smooth optimization for both constrained and unconstrained cases. In this part, role of convexity in optimization will be highlighted and further, the noisy version of Gradient Descent will be illustrated towards minimizing the error function which appears naturally in the course of Deep learning. Primitive computational techniques and algorithmic implementations will also be hinted at.

What is left to humans? The perspective of human judgement in demand forecasting
Summary: Many research projects in the area of artificial intelligence intend to imitate natural ecosystems, including biological systems, such as plants, animals or humans. However, as research deepens, developed intelligent systems increasingly ignore the benefits of human intervention in real-world applications. The objective of the talk is to center (or re-center) the discussion around human judgement in the area of demand forecasting. Different models addressing judgment-based forecasting methods will be presented and compared. Moreover, topics for new research directions integrating human judgment will be shared with the audience.
