Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts in one of the oldest fine art museums in Japan, founded in 1936. It is located in the cozy Tennoji Park, where the main residence of Sumitomo Family used to be. For the purpose of museums foundation, the site including the garden was given to Osaka city.

The museum mainly holds rich collections of Asian fine arts and long-term deposits from temples and shrines. Along with the exhibitions of these Asian classical art, the museum gathers many visitors by holding Western art exhibitions. When we visit the museum in September, the exhibition of Ukiyo-e prints from the collection in America will be on view.

The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened in 1977 as the fourth national museum in order to collect, preserve, exhibit, and research national and international contemporary art. The first location was in the Expo '70 Park, and the building was originally used for the Expo Museum of Fine Arts at Expo '70.

In 2004, the museum was moved to the present location in Nakanoshima. The building is constructed underground with the bamboo-like design on the ground.

Recently, the museum added a new collection, Alberto Giacometti's Yanaihara Ⅰ (1960-61). Yanaihara is the name of a philosopher Isaku Yanaihara (1918-1989), and Giacometti repeatedly created his sculpture between 1956 and 1961, when the philosopher sojourned in France. However, only two bronzes were finished, of which only seven casts in total are currently known.

This year, the museum holds serial collection shows placing this bronze in the middle. This project seeks to find various contexts in the development of fine art from the end of the 20th century to today. It will give us an opportunity to reconsider the meaning of collections and the power of exhibition.
