Climate change is one of the most critical global challenges of our time. Examples of its adverse consequences include extreme weather patterns leading to flooding, droughts, heat waves, storms, and other extreme weather-related events. Other challenges include air pollution, water scarcity, food insecurity and loss of biodiversity. The scale of the challenge is enormous; yet research outputs in areas that are central to addressing environmental sustainability remain marginal.
The United Nations has declared the years 2024-2033 as the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development with the principle aim of finding solutions to these global challenges. Science is a common good for humanity and offers fundamental support to a sustainable development model. Engineering and Technology will continue to play a pivotal role in improving the quality of human life, preservation of the planet and delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Possible plagiarism scenarios
Potentially complicating the task of identifying plagiarism is the fact that each of the factors listed above can be combined with others, creating a variety of possible plagiarism scenarios. Below is a comprehensive list of these scenarios, starting with the most severe:
Uncredited verbatim copying of an entire paper or a major portion (more than 50%) within a single paper — This includes instances where a large section of the original paper is copied without quotation marks, proper citation, references, or a bibliography. It also includes cases where various segments from different papers by other authors are copied without attribution, and the total amount of copied material exceeds 50%.
Uncredited verbatim copying within multiple papers by the same author(s) — This scenario involves cases where more than one paper by the same author(s) contains plagiarized content, and the combined amount of copied material across these papers exceeds 50%.
Uncredited verbatim copying of a large portion (greater than 20% but up to 50%) within a single paper — Here, a significant section of the original paper is copied from another source without proper acknowledgment, quotation marks, references, or a bibliography. This also includes cases where different parts of a paper are copied from multiple sources without attribution, and together they make up a substantial portion (up to 50%) of the paper.
Uncredited verbatim copying within multiple papers by the same author(s) — In this case, the sum of plagiarized content from the various papers is equivalent to a large portion (greater than 20% but up to 50%) of the shortest paper found.
Uncredited verbatim copying of individual elements (paragraphs, sentences, illustrations, etc.) that result in a significant portion (up to 20%) within a paper — For example, when sections of an original paper are included in another paper without quotation marks, proper citation, references, or a bibliography.
Uncredited improper paraphrasing of pages or paragraphs — This occurs when only a few words or phrases have been changed or when the sentence order has been altered, but no proper citation or reference is provided.
Credited verbatim copying of a major portion of a paper without clear delineation — This refers to cases where a section of an original paper is copied from another source and a credit notice is included, but the absence of quotation marks or proper formatting fails to clearly identify the copied material.
Plagiarism in short
While the more extreme and obvious cases are easier to recognize, the scenarios outlined above give us some fundamental factors to consider when evaluating allegations of plagiarism between authors.
The amount or quantity of plagiarized material does not itself define plagiarism. However, the extent of the copied material is crucial in determining the appropriate corrective action.
Simply including credit notices or references is not enough to avoid a charge of plagiarism if the copied text is not clearly identified with quotation marks or offset formatting.
Paraphrasing can still lead to a plagiarism charge if only minor changes, such as replacing a few words or rearranging sentences, are made. Even a properly paraphrased section may constitute plagiarism if the original source is not correctly cited.

All papers submitted to the conference will be peer-reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. All accepted papers will be published in conference proceedings with an ISBN number.
