We highly recommend having a fully functioning phone while abroad. Relying solely on WiFi is typically not sufficient. Check with you phone service provider about international plans, or use a local SIM card. To use a local SIM card, your phone must be unlocked. If your phone is paid off, you can ask your phone service provider for the unlock code. Make sure you do this before you go abroad.
Comments from previous students regarding phones:
I switched to T-Mobile before studying abroad as they cover unlimited 2g coverage and texts throughout the world. Although the coverage was slow, I could still use Whatsapp and Googlemaps just fine without wifi and that’s honestly all you need. Highly recommend.
I got my phone from Orange. There is a plan where you can pay for service month to month.
I recommend Vodafone. They have a 20 euro a month plan which includes 2.5GB of data. I would usually facetime my family whenever I wanted to chat.
