About the Conference

The conference is being organised jointly by the four departments under the Faculty of Life Sciences. The purpose of the conference is to exchange and develop ideas among the different biological disciplines so as to come out with an insight leading to better collaborations among the participating institutes, which would lead to fruitful future endeavours. As part of our transcendently impressive existence, we are organizing a three-day Conference. The organisers have the pleasure of inviting you to a three-day International Conference on “Growth of Biological Sciences in 21st Century”, scheduled from March 2-4, 2023. The conference aims at convening the members of scientific community and enthusiasts at one place to discuss the systematics, bioprospecting, conservation and functions of the living world. The conference will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their challenges, celebrate success, collaborate on new initiatives, and design their future research.

The Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala, started as a small department in 1967 has today blossomed into one of the leading Botany Departments in India. The Department has excelled in various areas including Plant Cytogenetics, Mycology and Plant Pathology, Algal Physiology, Biosystematics, Plant Physiology, Ecology, etc. with the help of generous financial support from UGC (ASIST, SAP, DSAI), DST (FIST) in addition to the support from CSIR, MOEFCC and DBT. Cytogenetics, Mycology & Plant Pathology and Algal Physiology are the three thrust areas recognized for financial support. Alumni of our department have carved out niches for themselves at National and International levels in the field of teaching, research and administration.

The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1968, subsequently, in the academic year 2011-12, the department was renamed as the Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences with the commencement of Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in Environmental Sciences. Since the inception of the department, the faculty has relentlessly worked to establish high standards and values of teaching and research. The department has been supported by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India under FIST, by University Grants Commission (UGC) under SAP (DRS I and DRS II) and by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under Interdisciplinary Programme in life sciences. The thrust area of research in the department are Insect Systematics, Forensic Entomology, Cytogenetics, Molecular Biology and Animal Physiology.

Established in 1987, The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology, Punjabi University, Patiala, , runs two masters programmes viz. M.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology and M.Sc. (Hons.) Microbial and Food Technology. The faculty of the department is involved in cutting edge research pinning around major thrust areas of Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Food and Fermentation Technology. The research efforts of the department have been recognized two times under the FIST programme of DST, Govt. of India and under interdisciplinary Programme in Life Sciences (IPLS) scheme granted by DBT, Govt. of India. Many major research projects have been awarded to the department by various funding agencies like DBT, DST, SERB, AICTE, DRDO, ICAR-NAIP and CSIR. The faculty members are involved in various collaborative projects with national Institutes such as IIIM, Jammu; PGI, Chandigarh; AIIMS, Delhi; NDRI, Karnal; IIT, Delhi, GMC, Chandigarh etc. The department has more than 10 patents to its credit and has successfully transferred two technologies to industries.

Established in 1970, The Department of Human Genetics is actively engaged in imparting quality education and research, starting from the basic principles of Human Genetics up to their relevance in causation and management of the complex human diseases and disorders. The thrust areas of the research in the department are immunogenetics, human population genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics and human growth and development. The Department was identified for financial support by DST under FIST programme in 2009 and by UGC under special assistance programme (SAP) in 2011. The department has built upon past strengths and has further developed expertise in the area of complex disease genetics.
