FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Message from Federica Bianco, Debra Elmegreen and Dara Norman- US

Dear Debra (CC Dara),

I am the Coordinator of the eighth Rubin LSST Science Collaborations and Co-Chair of the Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaboration (SC). On behalf of our organization, I am emailing to ask if this timely announcement about a funding opportunity can be shared with the IAU members. This proposal is particularly designed to support communities new to Rubin and underserved communities. We would especially want to reach members outside of the US since this opportunity is open to any nationality, but the structure of Rubin and the SCs is such that our reach is primarily in the US and a few selected international communities.

The Rubin Science Collaborations have partnered with the Heising Simons Foundation to support Rubin preparatory science focused on solar system, Milky Way, variable stars and transients with a kickstarter grant program. The opportunity is highly flexible in terms of who can apply and what projects can be sponsored. Proposals designed to increase capacity and develop opportunities for individuals and institutions that are new to Rubin LSST are especially welcome. Please see https://lsst-sci-prep.github.io/ for more details about the opportunity and to apply - Also note that the organizers will be available on September 8 and 9th to answer questions live in Zoom webinars. Note: kickstarter application deadline end of September

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

Dear Friends,

Schlumberger Foundation is opening soon the next call for applications for PhD & Post-Doc fellowships within the “Faculty for the Future Fellowship Programme”. The “Faculty for the Future Fellowship Programme” is ONLY FOR WOMEN FROM DEVELOPING & EMERGING COUNTRIES - the CALL WILL BE OPEN FROM SEPT 8TH TO NOV 5TH 2021.

All necessary info for the application process can be found at:

As to our experience with Schlumberger funded PhD students at BOKU, the “Faculty for the Future Fellowship Programme” is a really attractive one- providing a good monthly fellowship and a nice budget for implementing research activities.

Kindly note that:

# PhD applicants must be enrolled, admitted - or have at least applied for a PhD programme at an international host university abroad.

WORKSHOP, COLLOQUIUM on WOMEN IN ASTRONOMY

Message from Daniela Bettoni and Sara Lucatello- Italy

We would like to bring to your attention the "Laura Bassi Series" (https://sites.google.com/inaf.it/laurabassiseries/home)

The “Laura Bassi” colloquium series started on the occasion of the 2021 UN “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” and is hosted by INAF Padova Observatory. It aims at showcasing and promoting the research of early career women astronomers.

Talks take place on the second Thursday of each month, and the first talk of this academic year will be on Oct 14th, at 14:30 CEST.

Details at: https://laurabassiseries.inaf.it/

If you are interested in being a speaker (or know someone who would) please fill in the form at:

https://laurabassiseries.inaf.it/call-for-abstract

The series is named after Laura Bassi, “woman of extraordinary intelligence”, who became the first female University professor in the western world, teaching physics at University of Bologna in the XVIII century, a time when women could not pursue higher education nor learned professions, and universities and academies were reserved to men.

You can learn more about Laura Bassi here: https://sites.google.com/inaf.it/laurabassiseries/laura-bassi?authuser=0
