According to soinc.org, "Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation."
At Science Olympiad, you can use your passion for science to apply what you know and learn much more in the events you do, meet new people collaborate, and represent your school in this science competition.
Our school's Science Olympiad team participates in several Invitational competitions as well as the Regional competition (Region 6, details seen below). To be selected for the team, there will be a tryout containing an interview and exam portion held in early October. Join Google Classroom for more info about meetings, selection process, etc.
Michigan Science Olympiad is divided into 15 different regions. Each region sends a certain number of teams to advance to the state competition, which is held at Michigan State University. The Gnomes attend the Region 6 tournament at Detroit Country Day School in March alongside Troy HS, Detroit Country Day School, Stoney Creek HS, IA West, Athens HS, IA East, and others. The International Academy Gnomes regularly qualify to advance to the State tournament at MSU. The top 2 teams at the State tournament qualify for the Nationals tournament.
