The British of the International Arthurian Society is a community of scholars who are interested in the studying the fictional universe of King Arthur, whether that be from a literary, cultural, historical, or audiovisual perspective. We cover all periods from the early Middle Ages up to the present day. Membership is open to anyone who takes an academic interest in the world of King Arthur, including academics, graduate students, and independent scholars. We belong to the International Arthurian Society, which has national branches in multiple countries.
The branch meets every year in the UK for its annual conference, where members are invited to present their research. An international congress is held every three years.
In the 2025 AGM, the branch voted to re-name itself as the British and Irish Branch. The name change cannot be made official until we are able to modify our bank account, at which point we will update the website and official documentation.
Membership of the Society costs £25 p/a and includes access to the Bibliography of the International Arthurian Society, a searchable database of scholarly publications on Arthurian topics. Members will also receive the annual issue of the Journal of the International Arthurian Society (JIAS).
