IART was founded by Thaddeus Kostubala, MD and brought together early running therapists across the globe, as an informal yet enthusiastic network beginning in 1980. His dream was to share the benefits of running therapy across different ages, cultures and languages. The current reorganized North American IART network began post-pandemic, and first met formally in 2025 to collaborate more consistently.
