Iao United Church of Christ---in mission and ministry on Maui since 1895---is an open and affirming congregation of ALL people. No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.
MISSION
We are a people of God, living and sharing the love of Christ and reflecting that love in words and actions.
VISION
We will be a more inclusive and faithful community learning: to give voice to the silenced, to celebrate our commonalities, to use God's gifts, to bridge differences, and to practice reconciliation.
Floren“Tino” Cordova is the 11th child of 12 born and raised in rural Eastern New Mexico in a small village called Mosquero, New Mexico. It's a place where community still take care of each other’s needs without question. Tino’s graduating class was 10 in High School.
Tino began his ministry at Iao UCC on March 1, 2017, and was installed as the settled pastor on November 11, 2017 with protestors before their morning worship began.
His educational journey began with a Certificate of Information Processing Specialist from Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho (1992), BA in Religious Studies from Edgewood College, Madison, Wisconsin (2009), and a Master of Divinity and a Certificate of Sexuality & Religion from Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, CA (2013). He is the only sibling in his family to ever achieve a “masters” level degree and the only one in his father and mother’s side to ever attend seminary and get ordained.
He was ordained in 2013 through the Metropolitan Community Church and received “standing” in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and then transferred his standing to the United Church of Christ, Hawaii Conference – Tri-Aisle Association in Maui.
Tino believes in the importance of community outreach and in the empowerment of our beloved Youth, striving to bring the church back into community and a church that refuses to be silent or complacent amid injustices. He believes in leading with boldness as a faith community empowers itself and celebrates equality for ALL of God’s beloved children.
“We encourage others by leading with the example of our actions.” Rev. Tino Cordova
