Starting Therapy: What to Expect From Your First Counselling Session
Beginning therapy can feel like a big step. You might be wondering:
What will I have to talk about?
Will I be judged?
What if I don’t know what to say?
Is my problem “serious enough”?
These questions are completely normal.
At its core, counselling is simply a safe, confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with the support of a trained professional. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you arrive. You don’t need the “right words.” You just need to show up as you are.
The first session is usually about getting to know you. We may talk about:
What brought you to therapy
Your goals (if you have any yet)
Your background and current challenges
What you hope might feel different in your life
There is no pressure to share everything at once. Therapy moves at your pace.
Therapy is not about being judged or told what to do.
It’s not about being “fixed.”
It’s about understanding yourself more deeply, building healthier coping strategies, and creating meaningful change in a way that feels right for you.
Many people think they need to be at breaking point before seeking help. In reality, therapy can support you with:
Stress and burnout
Relationship difficulties
Anxiety or low mood
Life transitions
Personal growth
Seeking support is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you’re ready to invest in your wellbeing.
If you’ve been considering therapy, this might be your sign to reach out. Even a simple conversation can help you decide if it feels like the right fit.
You deserve support ~
