Gustavus Loehr is one of the four founding Rotarians but is less widely known than the others. This mining engineer held the initial gathering in his downtown Chicago, Illinois, office.

Gus was born to German parents on October 18, 1864, in Carlinville, Illinois. All seven of his (with their wife Frederika Knabner) children were born in the Prairie State.

He, like Harris and Schiele, was a Mason. In the beginning, he was the club's recording secretary.

As a mining engineer, his name appears in several of Paul Harris' books, and he was a partner in the Perfected Furnace Company of Chicago.
