Solidarity not Charity: Challenging White Saviorism with Learning Partnerships
What is “white saviorism” and how does it show up in adult education? During this session, participants will explore a shared definition of the term “white savior complex.” We will strategize ways to address this concept both as educators and on a personal level. Through the use of educational anecdotes, scenarios, and personal introspection, participants will consider how their perspectives in the field have evolved in recent years.

Moving Beyond the Basics: Integrating ABE Standards for Self Advocacy in Low Beginning ESL
In this session, participants will consider self-advocacy goals that ESL students may have. Using backwards design, participants will explore how other low-beginning curricula do or do not address these goals, and how integrating content standards (CCRS and TIF) can support these goals.
Amplifying Student Voices
The recent political climate has been a call to action for many and for others, especially our students, it can feel downright threatening. In this session, we will introduce a new curriculum with flexible lesson plans at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced/GED levels designed to launch a social media campaign which elevates student voices and shares the great work that we do in ABE.
Incorporating Mental Health Topics in ESL Instruction
Mental health is an important topic in adult education, but cultural views and language barriers combines with the stigma around mental health instructors' own cultures can present barriers to talking about it in the classroom. Join us as we share some materials we've developed to teach about mental health at the High Beginning ESL level, and the considerations that helped us navigate these conversations in our own classrooms.
