This event allows participants to discuss the challenges and opportunities that emerging scholars face, while fostering professionalism and a sense of collaborative community in a welcoming and relaxed setting. The workshop includes 8-10 minute presentations by speakers, followed by questions from participants. Speakers are Associate Professor Liz Rodrigues, Professor Ricia Chansky, Professor Craig Howes, and Professor Alfred Hornung.

In an era of mass extinction and rising temperatures, our ecosystems are under enormous strain. The nonhuman lives with which we interact, visibly and invisibly, are under threat and, consequently, so are human lives. This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of forms of life writing, such as ecobiography, eco-memoir, the braided essay, and the walking (or sitting) essay, to explore how our lives, memories, and stories intertwine with and are shaped by the natural world. Through readings, short writing exercises, and discussion, we will consider how to represent nonhuman lives in ethical and compelling ways at a time of ecological crisis.

As the twenty-first century unfolds around us, we are ever more prone to experiencing disasters and catastrophes as evidenced by global genocides, worsening climatological events, a global pandemic, and widespread instances of fascism, racism, xenophobia, and gender persecution that all aim to eradicate public identities. To work in life narratives in the Anthropocene era is to confront multilayered crises in the multimodal stories of our lives. How do we maintain a system of ethics in our work, especially as we participate in narrative transactions as witnesses and as ourselves survivors? In this workshop, participants will discuss together ethical frameworks for listening to eyewitness testimonies to disaster and crisis with a focus on oral testimony—including preservation and dissemination strategies—based upon Chansky’s work with disaster narratives in the Oral History Lab @UPRM.
