Ringback tones were incredibly trendy in the early and mid-2000's, but have since tapered off nearly to oblivion. Though almost nobody is buying ringbacks anymore, plenty of people still have them from back in the day.

Ringback tones piggy-backed on this idea several decades later, and would also come to be a cash cow. A patent for contemporary ringback tone technology was filed in the US in 2001, though earlier ringback technology had been used previously in the US and abroad. Verizon Wireless became the first US national carrier to offer ringback tones in 2004, when ringtones were a multi-billion dollar-a-year industry.

Ringback tone sales grew quickly in the early 2000's, holding strong until 2008, when sales plummeted dramatically as cell phone users began taking advantage of other new products, according to a statement emailed to Motherboard. By 2014, ringback sales got so low that AT&T, the nation's second largest wireless provider, stopped selling ringback tones. Verizon, the largest wireless provider in the US, did not respond to request for comment for this story, but still sells ringback tones for $1.99.

At first, the appeal of ringback tones was obvious: they were another way to customize phones in the pre-smart phone era when cellphone technology and design left little room for personalization. They were also an update to ringtones, allowing users to control how others experienced calling them.

These days, if you do a Twitter search for "ringback tones," you're most likely to see people complaining about just having heard one, which means one thing: ringback tones are still around. In the process of writing this story, I heard from several people that they or someone they knew still had a ringback tone, in large part because they have had it for years, and don't know how to get rid of it.

Paris, the 21-year-old with the Kanye ringback tone, said he does get some flack for his old school audio sometimes. "My brother was also in the hospital once (just broke his arm nothing too crazy)," Paris told me. "And a nurse called to leave me a message and I could hear her laughing in it so I can only assume it was from the ringback." He also says that a woman brought up his ringback tone on a first date, wondering why he hadn't ditched it.

We are trying to set the ring tone from the phone menu. It does not seem to change the ring tone for incoming calls. But it does change on the menu setting and also when tested via the volume up button.

Is there anything special you need to do with the Sangoma phones to get the custom ringtones to work? I've uploaded a custom ringtone, as an mp3, less than 15 seconds, applied it to the phone and rebooted the phone. I can confirm that it says...

I have a small setup of S500 phones to test a new setup. All phones are on firmware 2.0.4.27 and the EPM is the built in version at v.13.0.104.6.8 and does not show any further updates are available. I have tried with and without the GUI Override option and every time I push a new config, the ringtone set through the phone screen reverts to the config file.

Is there somewhere else in the phone system I need to have a setting changed so that it sticks? Im not throwing out the possibility is a misconfig on my end, but I dont see anything else. If they change the setting on the phone they said it will stick for about a few hours and then go back, which is most likely when the phone is checking in for config

I have the same issue, exactly and no matter which of the above steps I try, I cannot change the ringtone on my brand new Chime. It is just so amazing. I wonder where I else I could post to get some attention to this, like Wirecutter. Or iFixit or Consumer Reports. Customers have gone for over a year without a fix? Really?

I bought a Ring Doorbell 2 that came with a regular chime (not pro) in April of 2019 and as of last week I have not been able to change the ring or motion sounds. When I try Changing the sound It says Sorry Something went Wrong. I am not sure what is wrong with it. I have tried resetting it but that did not help; I even called Ring Customer Support and she could not figure it out. It does make a sound if the doorbell is rang or if motion is detected.

On the plus side, it has been a little better connecting to the doorbell from all devices lately. Still not quick enough though as I often have people walking away, but sometimes I can get them to come back. Needs to be about 3-5 seconds faster. I get off that horse now.

Experienced the same exact issue on the original Chimes. Used Android app 3.22.2 as well as reverted back to 3.20.0 with no luck. I have two chimes and both exhibit this issue. Tried resetting the chime as well as removing / re-adding device.

So whenever customer is calling, he/she first listen to an IVR and when IVR is transferring a call to an agent, during the transfer the customer cannot hear any ringtone its just a blank or say silence until the agent picks up the call. Can you tell me how to troubleshoot this ISSUE ?

When I set my text tone to tones purchased in the iTunes Store, my phone sporadically goes back to the default out of nowhere. I have tried syncing my phone with the cable and making sure the tones were downloaded to iTunes and it continues to happen. Every now and then a restart will keep it for a while but eventually and out of the blue it goes back to the default. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

I, too, am having this problem. I'm also on the iPhone XS Max on 12.0.1. I got into contact with Apple support & they're wanting me to restore my iPhone as new, log in with my Apple ID & test if it works. But I'm nervous to do something wrong & potentially not get any of my stuff back if I try to restore from a back up later. Apple will be giving me a follow up call back at 10AM. Do you happen to know when your ringtones were purchased? One of mine is from 2014 & the other is from 2016.

Exactly...the last thing I would want to do is have to restore my phone. What a hassle! If they get back to you with a solution, please do share it. Thank you for your response. One of my tones was purchased about a year ago and the other within the last few weeks. This issue also makes me never want to purchase tones from Apple again.

Venu 2 Plus. Before update to 9.17, when a call incoming, ringtone from phone was played on watch speaker. At the same time, vibration was constantly working. It is very comfortable. After update, an incoming call triggers one short peak and one vibro, as with a notification of a new message. I'm missing calls now. How to return everything back? Tried to change setting "System -> Sounds -> Ringtone", it does not help.

The volume in all watch settings is set to maximum. I did not change the settings, the ringtone stopped playing after updating to version 9.17. Maybe there is a possibility to rollback to the previous firmware?

Im having the same problem too, no ring tone on watch only vibration when the phone ring is on. If I turn phone to mute the watch gets the ringtone. Im sure it used to be on both at the same time. Samsung phone running android 12 and One UI4.1.
