Cubify Design is a program designed for advanced modeling projects. You can take advantage of powerful CAD features like complex assemblies and functionality of parts. You can share 2D drawings and easily export to your 3D printer when ready. Cubify Design is a powerful solution for printing with the CubeX 3D printer.

As many know a couple years ago Alibre Cad was purchased by 3D systems. Shortly after purchase the product was repackaged relabeled upgraded etc. the hobby level products became the cubify line of products and the professional level products became geomagic. I was a licensed user of the Alibler products at the hobby level.

I decided to download the cubify invent $50 free trial. Pretty much what I expeted . Easy to use for someexperenced with the product line . And I expected less tools and options vs the $300 per year Geomagic. One surprise that I did not expect. This software will not import an STL file REALY????!!! the normal output file is a fun file and you can export as and .stl so you can create a file to print with but you can not edit an stl . Even FREE CAd will import an stl. tomorrow I will run a test and see how the printer software handles files generated by this program.

design is more like what I have used in the past. the biggest advantage to design is you can create assemblies from parts and it will create 2-d drawings from a 3d model and you can create a 2d drawing if you want to or need to .

I paid for my original copy of Alibre and then when I brought a new computer and they would not connect my new machine to my remote license and stung me for another full License fee

I made a point of getting a stand alone license the second time around by then the software they had renamed cubify and drawings were not backwardly compatible .... and of course recently anyone without their own license code has just lost use of their software when they took the license servers off line

For professional (mechanics and designer), Solidworks is a widely used CAD software. Thus it is a good choice for people in Research labs and Universities. But Poppy has to be easily hackable also by makers/artists. For the moment the accessibility of Solidworks may be a constraint (Windows only + cost).

The table below provides an overview of computer-aided design (CAD) software. It does not judge power, ease of use, or other user-experience aspects. The table does not include software that is still in development (beta software). For all-purpose 3D programs, see Comparison of 3D computer graphics software. CAD refers to a specific type of drawing and modeling software application that is used for creating designs and technical drawings. These can be 3D drawings or 2D drawings (like floor plans)...

A friend who has worked for many years in the engineering design of architectural projects told me Solidworks/Catia-like software are now being replaced by a new much cheaper platform called Rhino 3D ( ), and especially with a set of open-source tools/plugins like:

The Free IronCAD-Rhino Integration provides users with a seamless way to harness the power of both IronCAD and Rhino in the design process. By using Rhino for styling and IronCAD\Inovate for mechanical features, you will experience dramatic productivity improvements over using each product alone.

I just accidentially found that Alibre released a hobbyist version of their CAD system, Alibre design. It's called Alibre Atom 3D and costs 350 Fr. if you live in Switzerland.

I have not tried it (I am a long time Alibre user and have the full version with active maintenance), but from the feature side it looks pretty decent and entirely usable, not just a stripped down demo.

Alibre Design is a parametric mechanical design software for general engineering use and roughly in the same area as Creo (former Pro/E), Catia, NX or Solidworks. It was acquired many years ago by 3D systems, who then brought out a DIY version of it (Cubify Invent) as support to their 3D printers. In the meantime Alibre Design is back with its original developers. 3D systems discontinued the entry level version of Alibre a few years ago and after this, there were only the full versions available. So this is again an affordable option for DIYers with pro function like sheet metal or BOM creation disabled (which you would not use anyway). Amazingly they have both STEP/IGES import and export, which was different with Cubify Invent IIRC. Solidworks import is not supported, so unfortunately you can't load Jonathans assemblies natively. However it retains 3D PDF export, which is fantastic!

So if you are still with OpenSCad or FreeCAD, this is your chance to upgrade to a near pro level CAD. In contrast to Fusion 360, it is old-fashioned desktop software, which works offline without subscription. It seems you need to be online for an initial license check (and if you want to move the license from one PC to another), but that's it. Probably they will try to sell you a maintenance subscription, which might make sense depending on how you use it.

Honestly I can't tell you how difficult it is to get started with Alibre. I have been using it since 2008 and have used parametric design software like Pro/E before, so I am not a beginner. Once you get the hang of it, I find it super fun to use. Try it!

I don't know F360. The demos look super slick, but who knowns... these are marketing videos.

One thing that's for sure is that Alibre is not too comfortable with freeform surfaces. So if you intend to design cars or other stuff with many irregularly shaped surfaces, you better look elsewhere. Over the years I did many designs with it, some for classical machining, some plastic injection molding, some fun part for 3D printing (SLS and later Prusa).

Of course anything organic is out of the question, this is the realm of ZBrush.

Maybe one note: The choice if tools might influence what the outcome of your work is. Will you be good at working around bugs? Or will you come up with great creative designs? To me this was not so obvious, but the pair Blender/ZBrush has been a real eye-opener to me. Others are Gimp/Lightroom/Photoshop... and of course our 3D printer.

Next question seems to be hard for anybody to know answer (I tried different companies): I am going to fit second extruder for Ultimaker Original for using two different colours. I am using Cubify Design software for design. There are several slicing software to support two colours, but none design software. I tried to learn Blender, which will answer the need, but Blender seemed very difficult for me to learn. I have Solidworks 2004 basic version, but that has no fuction for two colours.

I too have been wondering about this. I designed a cover for a tin for the wife. It was a cover with 'sugar' cut out of it. I made the same profile 'sugar' in a separate drawing as she wanted the writing in a different colour. I bought both pieces into cura, hit the merge button, and it merged them in the most illogical retarded way, i'll post pics tonight. Perhaps someone can see what i'm doing wrong.

3D Systems, the creators of the Cubify 3D Printer, has just released a CAD-like application that allows users to shape models like they were digital clay. Cubify Sculpt gives users the opportunity to freeform shape objects, giving a more natural feel to the design process and making it more accessible to the less-experienced designer.

Because it's powered by 3D Systems' volumetric CAD engine, which is used by professional engineers, the system has the ability to create complex, intricate designs that can be exported directly to a 3D printer. The exporting ability also allows for traditional CAD files to be created, such as STL, OBJ, PLY, CLY, and ZPC, according to Alyssa Reichental, media relations manager at 3D Systems.

Cubify Sculpt is a voxel-based CAD program, which, according to Reichental, means everything you design is water-tight and 3D-printable. "This is very powerful for both beginners and experienced users alike. For beginners, it takes away some of the challenge and concern over how to make their design printable, and for the experienced, its a quick band-aid for any overlooked flaws."

Sculpt lets users start with a design from a box, sphere, or cylinder of virtual clay. Utilizing varying push, pull, embossing, and paintbrush tools, the program has the natural feel of molding with Play-Doh, only with a mouse. Sculpt also manages to combine many tools that engineers and designers traditionally have to import and export between multiple programs to get the desired end result. "Cubify Sculpt simplifies the process all in one, affordable program," says Reichental. e24fc04721
