3:47 AM.
I looked up from the monitor and stretched, grimacing at the crick in my neck. On the desk next to me were five empty energy drinks and two convenience store bento containers. Even I admit this is super unhealthy.
“At least the debugging is now complete…’
I looked at the title screen of “Dragon’s Chronicle" on my monitor in satisfaction. The RPG (Role Playing Game) that had been developed for three years by yours truly had finally been completed. From the beginning by planning, all the way to my area of expertise in the world setting and dungeon design.
“We’ll be ready in time for tomorrow’s big update…”
I, Minase Shou, am 26 years old, single since birth, and my only hobby is gaming. I’m a typical game dev, but it’s not a bad life. I thought it would be enough that I could do what I love for a living.
I left the office, late into the night, and thought about buying breakfast from a convenience store. How much did I have in my wallet? There were only three days left until payday.
“Just enough for a can of coffee…”
I stopped in front of a vending machine on the street. After putting in 120 yen and pressing the button for a can of coffee…
There was a loud clang.
“Eh?”
The vending machine was tilted. Oops, it’s falling over.
“Whoa!”
I tried to avoid it, but after staying up all night my body refused to move the way I wanted it to.
You’re joking…?!
The heavy metal filled my vision–
–At least it wasn’t painful.
Instead it felt like I was floating in the air. Or free falling? All I could see was black, not being able to tell up from down.
Am I dead? But I can still think… is this my life flashing before my eyes?
I’m not sure how much time passed until a dazzling light suddenly enveloped me.
“Ughh…”
When I was able to open my eyes, I found myself surrounded by trees.
Blue skies, sunlight filtered through the leaves, the smell of dirt and grass, and the wind gently caressing my checks.
“Huh?”
It was confusing, I was just in a city full of night lights a moment ago. Now I found myself in the forest during the daytime. Around me were plants I had never even seen before growing abundantly.
Trying to stand, I noticed I was wearing different clothes. It wasn’t my suit, but simple clothes that felt like linen. The pockets didn’t contain my cellphone or wallet.
“Hold on a second, let’s calm down…”
I took a deep breath and tried to process. I was almost crushed by a vending machine, lost consciousness, and woke up to find myself in an unfamiliar forest.
“...Transmigration?”
The moment the word left my mouth I laughed deliriously.
“Oh man, maybe I’ve gone crazy from making too many games.”
But the feeling was too real to be a dream. The ground, cool air, it felt too real.
Shou pinched his check.
“Ouch”
It hurt. Really hurt.
Seriously…
I looked around, noticing how the scenery almost seemed familiar. The distinctive blue flowers, spiralling trunks, the distant outline of the mountains…
“No way…”
My face turned pale. It looked exactly like the “Forest of Beginnings,” the starter area in the game “Dragon’s Chronicle” that I had spent three years making.
“This has to be a joke…”
With trembling hands, I tried to use game logic.
“Menu Screen!”
Nothing.
“Status!”
No response.
“System Call!”
Again, nothing happened.
Clutching his head and sitting down, he had no choice but to accept that he had been transported to another world. However, he had no cheat abilities and couldn’t even open the status screen. This meant that he was just some cannon fodder tossed into a new world.
“What should I do…”
Anxiety began to wash over me. There were monsters in this world. In the tutorial, you encounter slimes and goblins in this forest. Without any weapons, magic, or any help…
The bushes rustled nearby.
My whole body tensed, could it be that monsters were already nearby…?
“Hello?”
An old man appeared from the thicket, carrying a basket on his back and making use of a walking stick. He looked like a typical NPC. No, in this world he was a real human.
“Oh, why is there someone here? Are you okay?”
The old man approached me with a worried look on his face, his movements natural and expressions genuine. He definitely seemed like a living person rather than some lines of code.
“Uh, yeah… I’m fine.”
I rose with a slight bow. It didn't hurt to be polite.
“There are monsters around here, yet you were alone on the ground without a weapon… Do you remember what happened?”
Hearing his words, I thought he was a godsend. If I could say I lost my memory, then my ignorance could be excused.
“Actually… I woke up here and cannot remember anything.”
It pained me to lie but I can’t just blurt out that “I am from another world.”
“That’s a problem. Anyway, come back to my village with me and you can speak to the chief.”
The old man led me through the forest. Along the way, I tried to casually gather some more information.
“Where… are we?”
“The village of Miltos, on the outskirts of the Raven Kingdom. It’s a rural area and takes ten days by carriage to reach the royal capital, but it’s a nice and peaceful place.”
Raven Kingdom… just like in the game.
It was only becoming more obvious that I was in the world of “Dragon’s Chronicle.” But why? And how could I return back home?
Rows of wooden houses surrounded by peaceful landscape greeted us on our arrival. It was the same scenery in the game, except seeing it in 3D only made it more alive. Everything, the smell in the air to the voices of the people, it made them all seem real.
The old man led us to the village chief’s house.
“Chief, I’ve found a lost person in the woods.”
The village chef was a muscular man in his fifties. He looked at me intrigued.
“What is your name?”
“I’m Minase Shou.”
There was no reason to try and hide my real name.
“Minase…That is a pretty uncommon last name. Are you a foreigner?”
“My memory is a bit hazy…”
The chef only stared for a moment then stood up. Why was he heading towards me?
“Excuse me real quick.”
He placed his hand on my shoulder, and something warm trickled through my body. Was this magic only found in a fantasy world?
“Hmm… you have some magic power. Quite a lot, too.”
“Magic power?”
This made me feel a bit hopeful, to have magic.
“Yes. And…”
His expression became complicated. Was there something wrong with me?
“You’re an Omega*, aren’t you?”
“O-me-ga*?”
[(*The chef uses Ω to refer to Shou, but he refers to himself in katakana like a foreign word)]
That word was new, there was no setting in “Dragon’s Chronicle mentioning this. Who on earth was he talking about?
“Didn’t know? Well, it can’t be helped if you don’t remember.”
He cleared his throat, ready to explain.
“It’s common knowledge that humans have a secondary gender, either Alpha, Beta, or Omega. Alphas are dominant and often have great power. Betas are most common and are the majority. And Omegas…”
He continued, choosing his next words carefully.
“They tend to be very fertile, but there are very few and many of them are physically weak. They have a special mating season called heat…”
My mind went blank. Omegaverse…? I don’t remember adding this setting to the game!
Heat? Breeding? What the… I don’t know anything about it. So I am an Omega? What, but I’m a man? Oh, even in Omegaverse men can be Omegas. But this is way too complicated.
“But this is strange… it’s rare that Omegas have such magical power.”
His words only went through one ear and out the other.
Being transmigrated to another world was one thing, but to become an Omega himself was a completely different story. And this was not a setting in the game. Something wasn’t adding up.
“For now, you should stay with us in this village. Maybe your memories will return, and you can work at the Adventurer’s guild for now.”
“Adventurer’s Guild…”
Now we were getting somewhere. I could put my gaming knowledge to good use at the Adventurer’s guild. In order to survive, I needed to grind.
“Thank you very much. I’ll see you around.”
After leaving the chef’s house, I was led to a hut that had been prepared for me. The room was clean, consisting of a basic bed, desk, and water jug.
“Huuu… let’s sort this out.” I took a deep breath.
Transported to another world via vending machine accident ?
World of “Drgaon Chronicle,” a game he had been developing
New Omegaverse setting that was still unknown
Secondary Omega gender
Having magical powers
“If I could just figure out this status screen…”
Once again, I tried every word I could think of, but nothing worked. If this continues, I might just have to live like this. The chef said that Omegas are supposed to be protected but…
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
I’d been independent for 26 years, there was no reason I needed to be a coward now.
“I know this game by heart, there’s got to be something…”
Maybe, if I used a different pronunciation or said it differently, something would respond.
“...Analyze**”
[(**He uses the Katakana pronunciation here as in “A-na-ra-i-zu” instead of the Kanji “kai-seki-gan”)]
Suddenly, faint letters appeared around me, filling the room.
[Wooden bed]
Durability: 45/50
Quality: average
Effect: HP recovery during rest +5%
[Water Jug]
Capacity: 2 liters
Contents: Well water (cleanliness: good)
“Yes!”
I couldn’t help but exclaim out loud. This was definitely a skill from the game. In “Dragon’s Chronicle,” it was called “Analytical Eyes**” that would show you the stats of an object.
I looked at my hand and tried to use the skill.
[Minase Shou]
Race: Human
Gender: Male (Ω)
Level: 1
HP: 100/100
MP: 1500/1500
Strength: 5
Agility: 7
Intelligence: 15
Spirit: 20
Magic power:? ? ? (unmeasurable)
Skills:
- Analytical Eyes Lv. 1
- ??? (Not yet awakened)
- ??? (Not yet awakened)
“Magical Power unmeasurable…?”
In games, this was reasonable, and meant that the value was outside the standard.
“Is this… a cheat?”
I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. It’s good that my magical powers are strong, but I still am not able to use them. In this world, magic is learned from skill books.
But I could survive now that I knew I could use Analytical Eyes.
“Let’s go to the Adventurer’s guild tomorrow.”
With that, I was able to get comfy on the bed.
I was still a bit anxious since I still couldn’t grasp the concept of Omega heat cycles. But with my game dev experience and Analytical Eyes, I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out.
The light from the setting sun streamed in through the window, and I closed my eyes.
Starting tomorrow, my life in another world begins.
–
In the morning, I followed the path the village chef pointed out to me heading towards the Adventurer’s guild in the next town.
A two-hour walk away from Miltos Village lay Ordis Town. A lively place, cobblestone streets, rows of shops, and people rushing through. It was the perfect typical RPG town.
The Adventurer’s guild was located in the town center, a three-story building with a sign bearing a crossed sword and staff.
It’s the same design as “Dragon’s Chronicle.”
Pushing the door open, the smell of alcohol and sweat hit me. The first floor seemed to be a bar, even during the daytime, with many adventurers already drinking. Honestly, how could their livers handle it?
“Oh, a newbie?”
A woman in her late twenties called out behind the counter. She had her brown hair tied back so you could see the guild emblem on her uniform, with a lovely smile.
“Nice to meet you. I’d like to register as an adventurer.”
“Oh, I see! My name is Elise, and I work the reception desk.”
I was relieved the receptionist NPC would be so kind, her big smile more expressive than I expected.
“You’ll need to take an aptitude test to register. Right this way.”
I was led to a small room where I was given a crystal sphere.
“Could you channel some of your magic power into this?…”
“It’s okay, I can figure it out.”
By some instinct, I somehow knew what to do. Hands on the crystal ball, I felt something warm flowing from within my body.
The crystal began to glow, faintly but gradually getting stronger.
Crack.
“Huh?”
The crystal cracked.
Crack, Crack.
“Wait a minute!”
The moment Elise tried to pick up the crystal in a panic–
It completely shattered.
All sound was sucked out of the room. Oops, did I do something wrong?
“...Um, excuse me.”
“No, it’s not your fault…Well, you can’t take all the blame…”
Elise only looked at the shards on the floor in confusion.
“Guild Master! There’s an issue!” She ran out and up the stairs.
Oh no, will I get kicked out for destruction of property…
As I was feeling anxious, I heard footsteps come down the stairs.
“Oh, so you’re the new guy who broke the aptitude device.”
A man with black hair, a moustache, and expensive taste in clothes looking in his forties appeared. He carried himself like a veteran warrior, with sharp eyes. He was not a normal man.
“My name is Leonardo, and I am the master of this guild.”
“I’m Minase Shou. And I apologize about the measuring device.”
If they were about to ask me to pay compensation, I’d truly be in trouble since I was broke.
“No need to apologize. When the amount of magical power exceeds the measuring limit, this is the result. It’s just rarely seen.”
Leonardo had a glint in his eye, his interest a little scary.
“You’re an Omega though?
“...Yes.”
How did he know? By smell or something?
“This is the first time I’ve seen an Omega with this much magical power. It's truly intriguing."
Leonardo put his hand to his chin in thought.
"Normally, new recruits start at G rank. However, as an exception, I will start you at F rank."
"Really?"
Lucky me! It couldn’t hurt to start at a higher rank.
“However, there are conditions.”
Nothing comes for free, huh?
"Please report back to me regularly. I want to see how a talented person like you grows."
"If that's all, I'd be happy to."
In fact, it's a good safety net to have someone to back me up.
“Very well. Elise, please proceed with the registration procedures.”
"Yes, Guild Master."
While Elise prepared the documents, Leonardo turned to me.
“By the way you were shocked earlier, do you understand the significance of being an Omega?”
“No, actually I lost my memory recently…”
To be honest, it’s because I’m from another world but I can’t just say that.
“I see. Well, let me give you some tips.”
Leonardo’s expression turned serious.
“Omegas have a special ‘heat’ period called estrus. It varies by person, but typically occurs every two to three months from three to seven days. During that time… well, things can get complicated.”
Well that didn’t sound good.
“What do you mean by things?”
“Your scent will become stronger to attract alphas. Alphas tend to lose their minds… and may not be able to act civilized.”
Isn’t that seriously crazy?
“Don’t worry. I’ll give you this.” Leonardo pulled out a small bottle containing a blue pill. “It’s a heat suppressant. This pull should help with the symptoms. We offer it at a special price to guild members.”
Thanking him, I accepted the bottle. To be honest, I was still unsure about this estrus period, but it was better to be safe than sorry. I couldn’t even imagine being a man and wanting to be bred in heat.
“Registration complete!”
Elise brought over my new guild card, with my name and the letter ‘F’ engraved in the metal plate.
“Beginner quests are posted on the message board, and you can choose which ones you’d like to take on.”
I headed over, where various types of quests were posted. Using Analytical Eyes gave me more detailed information too.
[Goblin subjugation]
Details: Defeat three goblins that haunt the nearby forest.
Risk level: Low (but moderate for beginners)
Recommended equipment: Weapons, Armor
Note: Possibly a trap
“Goblin Extermination…”
This was pretty standard quests to get beginners used to a game. The only problem was Minase had no weapons.
“Um, what should I do about weapons and armor….”
“Oh there’s a place next door. But it might be a little expensive for someone starting out…” Elise said with a concerned look. She’s a kind person.
“To start, what about gathering medicinal herbs? It doesn’t require any weapons and it’ll be safer.”
That’s certainly the safest option. But since I know this game… no, this isn’t a game anymore. I should be cautious.
“Yes, herbs sounds like a good idea.”
“Perfect. Here are some samples to help you out.”
Elise showed me some samples, a distinctive plant with red leaves and white spots.
“They grow on the edge of the forest, so you shouldn’t encounter any danger. The quest requires ten of them.”
“Got it.”
I accepted the quest and headed out.
–
1-4: Unrivaled in the first quest***
[(***I think the author accidentally left one of their placeholders here but spoiler :p)]
When I arrived at the entrance of the forest, I used Analytical Eyes to scope the area. Information about the plants filled my vision, and it took some work to pick out the medicinal herb I was looking for.
[Blood stopping grass]
Rarity: Common
Effect: Recovers from bleeding
Quest Item
“Sweet, this is it.”
I trailed deeper into the first, collected herbs. Thanks to the skill, it was easy to avoid poisonous and dangerous plants. After collecting the fifth herb, something strange popped up.
[Hidden Passage]
Type: Natural camouflage
Destination:? ? ?
There was a cleverly disguised path that normally one wouldn’t notice.
“This is…”
Oh. During the development, there was an early dungeon that ended up scrapped due to its difficulty level being hard to adjust properly. It was called “Ancient Trial Grounds”, a special dungeon that had no level restrictions. However, it was removed from the final version…
“Could there still be data left?”
Curiosity got the better of me. I had already gathered half of the quest items. It couldn’t hurt to take a little detour…
After passing through, an old stone entrance appeared.
[Ancient Trial Grounds]
Recommended level: None
Risk level:???
Reward: ???
“Let’s go!”
This dungeon’s specialty was that it was supposed to be conquered with wisdom and creativity, regardless of level. That’s why it was so hard to get the difficulty right. But as the dev, I knew all the gimmicks.
“There’s no reason to not go.”
Determined, I stepped into the dungeon.
The inside was dim, ancient writing carved into the walls. The room I found myself in had three stone statues lined up.
“Hm, I think the correct order was… left, right, center, left, left, center.”
I touched the stones in that order according to my memories, and the door opened with a click.
"Okay, just as I remember."
The next room has an intricate pattern on the floor, which I remembered too: follow the Big Dipper constellation shape.
In the third room, I gasped.
In the center of the room was a large treasure chest.
[Trial Treasure Chest]
contents:???
Warning: If you open it, a guardian will appear.
The guardian was a level 20 Skeleton Knight. Normally, there was no way that a level one newbie like me could beat him.
But… There’s a trick.
I walked towards the corner. To the unassuming eye there was nothing there but using Analytical Eyes…
[Hidden Switch]
Effect: Weakens the Guardian
This switch was here for debugging purposes during development. It was used to reduce the Guardian’s level to 2.
Click.
After hitting the switch, it was time to open the treasure chest. As expected the Knight appeared. However…
[Skeleton Knight (Weakened)]
Level: 2
HP: 50
Attack Power: 10
I picked up a rusty sword that had fallen to the floor. While I may not have combat experience, I think I can handle a level 2 enemy. The skeleton swung his sword slowly, so I was able to dodge to the side and whack it’s bare torso.
Clang!
My hand went numb, but at least I had landed a hit. Dodging and attacking, it was a slow ten minutes until the Skeleton Knight was reduced to a pile of bones.
“Haa….haa…”
My first real battle left my whole body shaking and struggling for air. But it ended in victory!
Time to check the contents of that chest.
[Ring of Creation]
Effect: Allows the use of creation magic
Rarity: Legendary
[Ancient Grimoire]
Effect: Learn basic magic
Rarity: Epic
[Gold coins x 100]
"You're kidding..."
The Ring of Creation is one of the rarest items in the game, allowing you to magically create anything you could think of.
I immediately equipped the ring and opened the grimoire. I felt knowledge flow into my head.
[Learn: Fireball Technique]
[Learn: Water Flow Technique]
[Learn: Wind Blade Technique]
[Learn: Earthen Wall Technique]
[Learn: Healing]
"All the basic magic!"
Unable to contain my excitement, I decided to try using creation magic.
Bottled water...
I put my magical powers into it and imagined it. A 500ml plastic bottle appeared in my hand.
"Amazing..."
I could not have asked for better drops. I quickly left, finished gathering the herbs I needed, and returned back to the guild.
“Welcome back! Have you gathered all the quest items?” I was greeted by Elise’s relieved smile.
“Yes, all ten.”
“Oh super quick! 10 herbs… but what are these?”
She had noticed the other items, silverleaf grass and other rare herbs were mixed together in my pocket.
“Additionally, I also spotted some rare looking things.”
“Silverleaf Grass? This is extremely valuable!”
Elise’s voice startled others nearby. The surrounding adventurers looked on in doubt.
“The newbie collected Silverleaf Grass?”
“It’s just a fluke.”
Elise calculated the reward while ignoring the adventurers' chatter.
"The usual reward is five silver coins, plus two gold coins for finding the Silverleaf grass. That's two gold coins and five silver coins in total."
"Gold coins?!"
The surrounding adventurers are shocked. It's unheard of for a rookie to earn gold coins on their first quest.
"Isn't that amazing?” Elise said happily. Seeing her smile made me happy too.
That's when Leonardo came down.
"I thought it was noisy...oh, it's you."
"Guild Master"
"Getting Silverleaf Grass on your first quest is pretty impressive. Or maybe..."
Leonardo smiled meaningfully. Did he notice something?
"Maybe it's ability?"
"It was just luck."
"There's no need to be modest. Results are everything."
Leonardo tapped me on the shoulder.
"I'm looking forward to your reports, Minase Shou~."
That night, I was alone at the inn, checking out the day's harvest. The Ring of Creation, basic magic, and 102 gold coins. My life in another world started off better than I expected.
But it was too early to relax. With this Omega trait, and heats acting like a ticking time bomb, I couldn’t imagine what could happen, much less what an estrus would look like.
I need to get stronger…
With renewed determination, I closed my eyes and went to bed.
Tomorrow, my life as an adventurer will only get more exciting. And eventually…
I want to go on an adventure with someone.
For some reason I fell asleep thinking this.
