The future has always been the big unknown that both fascinates and frightens us. It represents a promise of hope and opportunity, a chance for redemption and renewal. For much of 2020, it felt like we were all on the edge of our seats as we read each daunting headline about a pandemic threat and social unrest. I started to read natal charts for friends and strangers as a way to put my astrology knowledge to good use. I wanted to give people something to look forward to by providing a way of looking inward. Admittingly, I was very optimistic at that time. I viewed 2020 as a cultural course corrector but now that years have passed, I see how the future continues to be unpredictable and unkind. War, corruption, climate change. There seems to be no end to the unraveling of destructive actions set in motion by forces beyond the control of an individual. On a global scale, we we see the impact of our carbon footprint and corporate greed; a consequence of the modern society and capitalist framework.
Technology has been at the forefront of innovation and change over the last century, providing vast improvements to our lives, yet it's at odds with the natural order of our environment. Despite how we feel about the future, it is difficult to imagine ourselves without our devices, which undoubtedly will further evolve within our lifetime for better or worse. So, what will the future look like? Perhaps more importantly, what do we want the future to look like? Whether we use clairvoyance to interpret divine expressions, or artificial intelligence to logically derive patterns and probabilities, there is power in spurring the imagination of what has yet to occur and who we are to become. Who has the power and what vision will we accept for our future? Whose voices will we listen to and what messages have been largely ignored?
At the end of 2023, I asked the latest ChatGPT-4 with its DALL-E generative art capabilities to create a poster for the coming year. Providing no further details in the prompt, I was soon presented a rather predictable vision of 2024 that would appease any techno-futurist or William Gibson fan. Included was the text, “Here is a futuristic poster for the year 2024, capturing the essence of advanced technology and vibrant urban life.” The image superimposes whirling flying saucers, hyper-speed cars, digital billboards, scarce plant life and hovering illuminated text, Welcome to 2024 with a curious moth symbol underneath. Indeed, much like a moth to a flame, the eyes are fixated to the beam of light at the center of the poster, perhaps representing the power generated source in this version of the future. If this was ChatGPT’s prophetic baseline, I wondered what it would generate with a little more inspiration.
In my next prompt, I asked ChatGPT, “Create a poster for 2024 including concepts of spiritual feminism.” This time the future appeared starkly different. Instead of a sprawling cityscape, Mother Earth was front and center, and rather reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Floating in a giant orb while encircled by a band of women linked hand-in-hand appeared a dark-skinned, multi-armed goddess. The exact symbols surrounding her are a bit difficult to decipher but there’s no shortage of flora and fauna as well as sacred geometry and cosmic visuals in this imagination of 2024. Interestingly, technology is still represented by solar and wind energy. The subtext for this image: Here is a poster that visualizes a vision of 2024 with adaptations of spiritual feminist concepts, embodying unity, empowerment, and harmony. If one were presented either future side by side, which would bring more peace and fulfillment? What future would aid humanity instead of accelerate its demise?
