I supervise Ph.D. and integrated M.S.-Ph.D. students through the University of Science and Technology (UST), whose graduate campus is hosted by the Center for Underground Physics (CUP) at IBS in Daejeon. Students apply to the Basic Science major and choose Physics as their specialization at a later stage. Admitted students join CUP as full members of the research group and work on the same experiments and hardware as our postdocs and staff scientists, both in the laboratory in Daejeon and at the Yemilab underground laboratory.
COSINE-100U and COSINE-200: dark matter search with low-background NaI(Tl) crystals at Yemilab
Purification of NaI powder and growth of ultra-low-background crystals
NEON: detection of reactor neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering
R&D on new scintillators, cryogenic detectors, and photosensor readout for dark matter detection
AMoRE: neutrinoless double beta decay search with cryogenic molybdate bolometers
All students in my group receive a monthly stipend: 2,100,000 KRW for M.S. students and 2,640,000 KRW for Ph.D. students. Support for conference travel and for on-site work at the underground laboratory is provided separately through research grants.
UST admits students twice a year, for the spring and fall semesters. Application procedures, deadlines, and required documents are described on the UST admissions page: https://www.ust.ac.kr/admission/index.do
When applying, select the Basic Science major with the Center for Underground Physics (IBS) as the affiliated research institute. Students interested in any of the topics above are encouraged to contact me by email (hyunsulee at ibs.re.kr). Inquiries from international students are equally welcome; the program is conducted in English.
