Hyemin Lee PhD, MPH (she/her)

I am a sexual and gender minority (SGM) health researcher, currently working as a postdoctoral associate of the Lavender Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland College Park. I received my doctoral degree in Public Health Sciences from Korea University (Dissertation title: Gender minority stress and health among Korean transgender adults - Rainbow Connection Project II -). My doctoral dissertation was supported by a two-year doctoral fellowship from the National Research Foundation of South Korea

My current research focuses on understanding and addressing disparities in mental health and substance use among SGM individuals, particularly SGM adolescents of color. Specifically, my work explores how the intersecting identities of SGM people of color—including their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity— shape their experiences of discrimination, stigma, and marginalization, and the resulting impact on their mental health and substance use. Additionally, I investigate the role of resilience factors, such as community connectedness and family support, in promoting improved health outcomes and access to healthcare services for members of SGM communities. Through this research, I aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of SGM health issues and inform interventions to reduce health disparities in these populations.
