A hydraulic lift cannot be a preferred solution for a high rise buildings due to their architecture limitations but have a high capacity for rehabilitation. However, the electric lift system works has the counterweight to balance the system. Here, an electric motor will allow elevation and descent through the vertically fixed rails and the security locks will stop and regulate its speed. An electric lift can reach over 10 floors but not easy to maintain.
Speed is another difference between these lift types. Since a hydraulic lift has relatively constant speed and cannot travel beyond 150 feet per minute, the performance of oil fluid also varies with temperature and can produce heat. But a traction lift is more energy efficient as the counterweight balances the car load while the hydraulic system needs more force to push the car against gravity.
Hydraulic lifts are also easier to maintain and install that the traction variety. They literally require 10 percent less area by the hoistway than the electric lifts because the piston has more effective weight bearing capacity when high load is elevated. An electric elevator runs on traction ropes so it can cause extra noise but a hydraulic system is a soundless operation so one can enjoy a smooth and soundless ride when starting climb or descent.
Hydraulic lifting systems are more secure than electric ones because they run on 12V battery and can easily reach the nearest stop in case of power failure or other mishappening. Users can safely evacuate when the lift is descending down. Even if a fire happens, the hydraulic drive at ground level will control an emergency descent. But the upper floor machinery and counterbalance structure in an electric lift is a difficult thing to reach. However, batteries for a rescue in an electric one need to be availed.
Hydraulic lifts are safer and soundless but prone to more maintenance because they need heavy oil dosing. Oil leakage can also happen and that could require more upkeep and oil replacement contrary to electrical because electric lift is balanced by counterforce and there is no fluid workup. However, a hydraulic lift has a low installation cost and set the conservation standard in energy savings high. Still preferences for electrical elevators are rising even though hydraulic lifts are accepted worldwide even today.
