Hyderabad: Even though technology has made great advancements and we are living in the smartphone era, the radio still holds a special place in our hearts. And a radio repair shop in the Old City is helping radio enthusiasts keep the old charm intact.

Set up in 1948 by Shaik Mahboob, during the end of the Nizam rule, the repair shop still enjoys its patronage for customers. The story goes that Mahboob, a businessman, frequently visited Bombay, now Mumbai, and during one of his trips bought a radio set. As the curiosity for the piece grew in his neighbourhood, a few of his acquaintances sought his help in getting radios from Bombay.

The brothers, Mohammed Mujeebudin, 82, and Mohammed Moinuddin, 71, learned the craft from their father, who started selling and repairing radios in the 1920s after a trip to Bombay, where he bought his first set.

With the golden age of radio long gone, not only does the technology seem beyond fixing but also the future of Mahboob Radio Service. Neither of the brothers has taught his children the art of repair.

Abstract: Wireless communications have a rapid growth that leads to huge demand on the deployment of new wireless services in both licensed and unlicensed frequency spectrum. The performance of Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) in cognitive radio is based on two factors: cooperative gain and cooperative overhead. There are many other dominating factors that affect the performance of CSS like the presence of attacks, energy efficiency, sensing time and delay, spectrum efficiency, etc. The major threat to CSS is Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification (SSDF) attack. Existing methods to mitigate the SSDF attack doesn't focus on energy efficiency which is performed here. To deal with these challenges, we propose an energy efficient mechanism against SSDF attack for healthcare application in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs). We propose a Malicious Node Identification Algorithm (MIA) to mitigate the problem of SSDF attack in the network and to eliminate the redundant data at the fusion centre, Balanced Cluster-based Redundancy Check Aggregation (BCRCA) mechanism is proposed. Finally, the decision taken by the fusion centre is based on Weighted Selection Combining (WSC) technique that improves spectrum decision accuracy.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay established the TIFR National Balloon Facility (TNBF) at Hyderabad near geomagnetic equator, in 1969. The TNBF undertakes design/fabrication of stratospheric balloons and is also responsible for balloon launch, tracking, data retrieval and recovery of scientific payload after the flight. It provides radio telemetry, telecommand, tracking and undertakes mechanical and electrical integration and test of the scientific payloads. The TNBF has also its own R&D programme in balloon engineering and support instrumentation. To-date 419 balloon flights have been carried out for space astronomy (x-ray, gamma-ray, infrared) and atmospheric sciences (ozone, aerosol, electric field and conductivity). In future several balloon flights are planned for the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and for the space astronomy programme. ff782bc1db
