HWSabroad
Spring 2022 Program Application Cycle

Set yourself apart - STUDY ABROAD!

It's academic, accessible, and affordable

Studying abroad shows prospective employers and graduate/professional schools that you are willing to take on challenges, that you are interested in other perspectives, and that you are flexible and adventurous. Employers value international experience and the skills and attitudes developed by navigating different cultures. Nationwide, less than 2% of college students will study abroad each year. Most of your competition for jobs and post-graduate education won’t have this experience on their resumé.

Studying abroad is a great way to gain meaningful international experience and set yourself apart.

The study abroad application process:

Step #1 - Research

Why do you want to study abroad? Figure out what you hope to get out of studying abroad. What are your priorities while abroad? Language learning? Major/minor requirements? HWS Goals? Service opportunities or an internship? Studying alongside HWS students abroad or being more independent? Living in a homestay or student residence? Do your research to find out which programs best fit your needs and what requirements those programs have.

Step #2 -

Step #3 - Meet with your Adviser

Meet with your adviser to discuss how study abroad fits into your academic plan. Each application you submit online must have your adviser’s e-signature - DO NOT wait until the last moment!

Step #4 - Apply Online

Carefully consider program requirements and essay questions. Go to the CGE application portal and complete the online application. You must submit an application with your adviser’s e-signature and essays for each program to which you want to apply. Make sure that you follow the directions carefully!

  • We consider your GPA, academic fit, essays, social record, class year, and prior participation when evaluating applications. Visit the CGE website to see if you meet the GPA requirements and if you’ve met or can meet program prerequisites before departure.

  • You must write two essays for each application you submit. Take advantage of on-campus writing resources such as the Center for Teaching and Learning. Take these essays seriously; they are critical to your application.

  • We only want to send good citizens abroad, so student social conduct records are carefully screened.

  • Late applications will be automatically waitlisted.
