Graphic Organizers for Story Retelling

Quick Ideas!

  • Read or and look at pictures in books together. You don't have to read all the words in a story. Just talking about the pictures is enough!

  • Talk about what is happening in the pictures. Model descriptive langauge and vocabulary.

  • Ask your child questions about pictures, characters, actions, and events ( Who, What, Where, Why, When, How). If you child does not know how to respond to certain type of question, MODEL the answer for them! Always pause and leave space for your child to respond and process.

  • Play I-Spy to work on descriptive language and basic concepts (size, color, location, etc). Emphasize the 5 senses when giving clues (sight, touch, smell, taste, sound), as well as fucntion and category of an object.
