College Library

Introduction

Library is considered as an important resource centre for information storage and retrieval. It performs a supplementary and complementary role in teaching-learning and research activity. The services of the library contribute significantly to the development of information services particularly in the e-learning process. Libraries today shoulder newer responsibilities in higher education wherein classroom teaching plays a facilitating role and the library becomes the primary learning centre. In spite of the dawn of e-books and online resources available at the click of a mouse, the necessity of books and the library is relevant even today.

The Central Library of Government Degree and PG College for Women Hussaini Alam was established in the year 1984. The college offers UG and PG Courses both traditional and restructured. The Department of Library and Information Science is located in the ground floor in a separate wing for the convenient use of students and staff members. The College Library comprises learning resources which include books, periodicals, magazine and various journals for use of UG & PG students. The Library subscribes to E-ShodhSindhu N-LIST consortium for Higher Education institutions established by the MHRD, Government of India and maintained by INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Library is automated with ILMS Software NewGenLib.

Library Information

Open access system is followed in the library to facilitate the students and teachers to retrieve information smoothly. Reference Section is available in the library which includes spot reference books such as Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Yearbooks, general and subject reference books. They are not available for home lending. Identified copies of text books are kept for lending in the Text book section.

All the text books and other books are issued to the students and staff. All UG and PG students of the college are the members of the library and are allowed to borrow the books periodically. Renewal facility is provided if the same book is not in demand from others students. The students are required to produce the college identity card for borrowing books and should return the same before the due date i.e. within 15 days to avoid inconvenience to other students.

Aims and Objectives of the Library

1.       To provide print information resources to the students and staff of the college.

2.       To provide electronic resources to the students and staff of the college.

3.       To develop information retrieval skills among the students.

4.       To develop information literacy skills among the students.

5.       To inculcate and encourage reading habit in the students by providing relevant reading material.

6.       To organize Library orientation classes to make the students aware of Library resources and services.

7.       To provide a peaceful reading atmosphere in the Library.

8.       To provide additional information through books and internet in order to supplement class room curriculum.

9.       To provide competitive exam material to the students.

10.   To provide career related information.

Accommodation

The library is situated in new building funded by RUSA in a sprawling 2800 sft area having a Text Book section, Reference Section, Periodicals section and Digital Library.

Library Working Hours: 10:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M on all working days.

Inter Library Loan

Since 2010-2011 the library has introduced inter library loan facility for acquiring material that is not available in college library. A Memorandum of Understanding is agreed with following two colleges.

1. Govt City College near High Court Hyderabad.

2. Vivekananda Govt Degree College Vidya Nagar Hyderabad.

The same is followed 2016 onwards in which an MOU is signed between the principals of GDC Hussainialam and Indira Priyadarshini GDC, Nampally, Hyderabad.

Extension/Departmental Activities

The Department of Library and Information Science is organizing and taking part in various departmental activities to market library resources and services among the staff and students. It is celebrating important days in the history of library and information science and diverse competitions are conducted for the students such as –

• Quiz

• Collecting News and Information / News corner

• Book Review

The important days being celebrated by the Department are –

• Information Literacy Day

• National Library Week

• World Book Day

Other activities such as Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, Book Exhibition and Field Trip are also organised by the department.

Library Automation

The Library is automated with ILMS Software NewGenLib EE v 3.1 version. The software has been installed under RUSA funds in June 2017. Acquisition of books, Bar-coding, Circulation and Visitor Counter are some of the activities performed through the Automation software.
