GENERAL OPERATING POLICY
Pathology Department is one of the Clinical Support Services in Hospital Umum Sarawak (HUS). The department provides medical laboratory diagnostic and consultation services for the entire clinical services in HUS and external health facilities in the State. We aims to provide quality services to ensure accurate and timely lab results. The purpose of this handbook is to give information to HUS Pathology Laboratory users a succinct overview to the scope of services, from patient’s specimen collection, testing of biological sample, to report dissemination. This handbook aims to optimise the clinical utility of Pathology laboratory services while also reducing error. Users should be aware that pre-analytical factors such as improper specimen collection, handling, and transport may affect the test's interpretation.
LOCATION
Department of Pathology is located at the Day Care Complex (DCC) building, HUS. The department management office is located at Level 4.
The laboratories in the Department of Pathology are located in the following areas equipped with own specimen receiving counter:
Location of Pathology Department, Day Care Centre and Diagnostic Complex (DCC)
a) Main Laboratory
The Integrated Laboratory (Chemical Pathology and Haematology) is located at Level 3
Histopathology is situated at the ground floor of DCC building.
Medical Microbiology is located at Level 4 (West Wing)
Cytopathology and Specialized Chemical Pathology (Special Protein Lab and Drug Lab) are located at Level 4 (east wing).
b) Satellite Laboratory
The Molecular Laboratory (0.1 km from the DCC building)
Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital provides the following services:
Routine Clinical Chemistry, Immunochemistry, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Toxicology, HbA1c and Drug of Abuse Testing
Histopathology, Frozen Section, Cytopathology, Seminal Analysis, Clinical Autopsy, and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)
Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology, Serology, Mycology, Parasitology, Molecular and Virology
Referred-Out Test Services:
Test which are not provided in Sarawak General Hospital will be referred or outsourced to selected referral laboratories for analysis. These labs are chosen based on criteria to ensure quality is maintained. The Pathology Department's list of tests includes those that are referred to external labs:
