It was in the year 1970, a 6-year-old Husain Mala shifted to Panchgani unaware of the fact that he will discover a host of opportunities and will transform his ancestral home into a cosy courtyard filled with his creations.
Along with his studies, he managed Paradise Café which was opened by his father Mohammed Mala in 1978 but kept on dreaming and working hard. “Shy and introvert, but determined”, as his mother puts in, he believed in hard work and loved challenges. When just in a Café, he kept on experimenting with its menu and came up with different and delicious delectable like Frankie, handmade ice creams and chocolates which were unfamiliar to Panchgani inhabitants.
From poultry farming to hardware, he pulled out all the stops during his early years. His diverse interests and intense curiosity proved to be fruitful and he started with beekeeping and finally, Pure Gold was born. Started with 10 apiary boxes of honey in 1985, the production has risen to a staggering 5000 apiary boxes and still counting.
The success didn’t impress him much and he continued the quest, which led to the launch of the tastiest jam named Three berry jam with a new brand “Pure Berrys”. Three berry jam is till date our most loved product. The year was 1990 and the love which three berry jam got paved the way for Husain Mala’s dream of expansion. He has now 150 products under Pure Berry’s which include jams, preserve, crushes, syrups and many more.
His wife Farida Mala, whom he affectionately refer to as “Queen bee”, loves baking. He started with Cake & Cream which is wholly handled by Farida Mala. She is undoubtedly a terrific baker and people travel miles to devour her pastry, cheesecakes and cookies.
Husain Mala Sir is exceptionally farsighted and it is no surprise when he thought of expanding from berry to dairy. In 2014, he started with a cheese factory which is looked after by his son Mustafa Mala Sir who is equally enthusiastic. Cheese blocks, cheese spreads in some delicious flavours, ghee, and yoghurts are his creations. The novel idea of giving the opportunity to see the cheese preparing procedure from the glass window bought it ample attention. The courtyard is better known as a cheese factory now.
Moving a step ahead, he entered into fragrances and launched a variety of soaps, shower gels, cold-pressed oils and perfumes in 2018 with the brand named after his only daughter Umme Salma Mala.
As an ardent nature lover and conservationist, Mr Husain is on a constant lookout for ideas that preserve nature. He arranges tree plantation drives and has grown more than 5000 trees. Long before Swach Bharat Abhiyan started, he shouldered the responsibility of keeping the environment clean and distributed free dustbins.
His generosity has no end as he is involved in unnamed charity works throughout the year. Providing free meals, three days a week is a constant practice. Apart from this, interest-free loans are another way to reach out to people in need. He is indeed a person of virtues.
Mr Husain’s courtyard is certainly not just a factory but a true reflection of his passion for food, taste, art, nature and royalty. From the collection of his vintage cars to the royal buggy which he got made for his holiness “Syedna Mohamad Burhanuddin Maula” for his 100th birthday procession in Mumbai is all displayed in his courtyard.
Mr Husain Mala is incredibly focused and constantly innovating and expanding to present the best from nature. He believes in sustainable growth and strives to achieve it.

1964: Husain Mala is born to Mrs Fatema And Mr Mohammed Mala
1970: Mr Mohamad Mala along with his Family Shifts to his ancestral home in Panchgani from Bombay.
1978: Starts working in his restaurant “Paradise Café” opened by his father.
1985: Launches “Pure Gold” with 10 apiary boxes of honey
1990: Starts another brand “Pure Berrys” with three berry jam.
1995: starts a bakery “Cake and Cream” and Opens another café named “Café Berrys” in the same courtyard
2000: Expands Pure Berrys by introducing other varieties of jams, preserves, crushes, syrups etc.
2014: Expands Pure Gold by getting into Dairy and Starts the cheese factory
2018: Moving From Flavours to Fragrances - he Launched ‘USM’
