PTO Meeting March 12, 2024- PTO Minutes
Principals’ Report:
School Improvement Plan:
Increase percentage reading bench marks by 5 percentage- 1-3- parents were notified about how they were doing. Kindergarteners are on a different schedule so they can acclimate to their new school routine. K starts their assessment in January so we get the best picture of their ability. They 4th and 5th grade do a different assessment as well. It looks at something different.
#2 Meet monthly consult with an outside agency- Melissa Orkin . Sarah Gannan is training in k-3. 4th small group training instruction
Promoting character trait of the month- PAWS- All teachers- responsive classroom and positive behavior
Special ed/Rise population-inclusion specialist- all staff were interviewed. They sat down and will survey all staff. How people view inclusion?
Top Secret Science scheduled $10 a student for grades 3-5 PTO enrichment The teachers will work together will pick their topics. They will do 4-5 experiments together.
Whale Mobile is booked for k-2
Change is Simple Schedule- 2 are on MCAS day. Trying to schedule to ½ days instead or June. Table the two days instead. Add them in next year instead.
Drama Club Performance- Wizard of Oz performance today- show for all the kids today. They will do it for the parents on Wednesday.
Need to get a new lunch monitor- will put in wildcat weekly.
Report cards 3/22

No School on 3/29
Change is Simple- additional $5000 for next year . We would need more fundraisers to come up with more money. In the past, we have applied for grants. We will apply for next year. We will have to figure out next year if it is feasible. If not we will to find out different enrichment options.
Dine Out- Wicked Bagels- opposite from Staples- a dozen bagels 50 percent bag out on social media.
Parents night out- Friday, May 10. Same DJ as last year. Hall $400 last year. DJ- $500 80’s theme Budget $1200 There could be additional cost for an extra bar station. Have a good amount of tablecloths and decorations that haven’t been used. Ticket sales will be on cheddar up website. Free version will work for us. Sell tickets, t-shirts going forward. See how it works. It charges 25 cents. We might need to do a cash/check option if someone doesn’t want to pay the fee. Waiting on numbers for t shirts for field day, fifth grade, canvas bags, blankets, t shirts. They could buy from us. Donation letters have been sent out to businesses.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. It is May 7. MCAS May 7 and May 9. May 6, 8, 10, and figure out 2/3 other days to fill in from there. Places email for donations for Teacher Appreciation week. Raffles for Teacher Appreciation week.
Book Fair April 29 May 3 is book fair. MCAS during that week. April 30, May 1. Have Caitlin Skinner email Scholastic to see what else they have for availability.
Read A Thon a little under $8000 donations right now. Goal was $10,000
Movie Date: Garfield: Ms. Duffy reached out to them. Concern for some classes at Hurld Wyman. Ways to make it for all classes to enjoy the movie. Price is $450 a bus. Maybe shifts.
Dates for June: End of Year Party- by next month to figure out a date to get venders locked in. Possibly June 6?

Principal's Message: Kristen Maloney
October Character Trait is Citizenship the teachers will be looking for children to nominate in their classrooms.
Veterans day show is coming up
Thursday at 9am- we will have a speaker for Veterans day
Food drive to come. Children who donate 5 cans will receive 5 YES hours.
Friday is veterans day and we have NO SCHOOL
Day before Thanksgiving half day out at 12
Thanksgiving the 24th and the 25th we have off
16th reports cards will be going out
Winter show will be Dec 15th at 9am. We can use front row seats at the winter show as a raffle

· Every teacher has a room parent. Email went out to check on how everything is going.
· PTO meetings will move to 5:30-6:30pm after the 1st of the year except for in person meetings.
November 2nd Election Day Bake Sale went great. Thank you to all the volunteers and everyone who made and brought in baked goods.

Room parents should typically get about $300 from the whole class give or take and it is usually divided 100/100/100 – Christmas, end of year gifts, and teacher appreciation
Room parents who reach out to parents and remind them about donations/contributions maybe 2-3x
We met our goal for Trick or Trek!

· Trick or Trek – Went great. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and help set up and who brought decorations.
Paul Scanlon:
Balance sheet to be presented at all meetings
Siobhan to get on account at bank soon
Election day went over 1200 + (full dollar amount to come considering it just wrapped up an hour ago)
Trek over 16,000 and 1,200 paper donations. After fees profit should be 15,000+
Book fair brought in $800 and $2000 scholastic dollars
Deadlines for reimbursements from teachers should be sent by Dec 1st.
PTO – used cash and scholastic dollars to purchase books for library and 40 students were assisted in getting books this year.
May BOGO book fair no scholastic dollars accepted but the $800 brought in from the fall book fair will cover the cost of the BOGO book fair.
Secretary Report:
· The School Directory is done and a revised PDF will go out this week in the Wildcat
· Our website is up running and is being updated regularly so parents can find information there including links to our meetings
Nikki T:
o Holiday shop getting started. Lets set a date. Week of the 12th?
o 12th -16th for holiday shop Tu-fri.
o After school uses Library, Ms. Maloney will give them a classroom to use instead so the holiday shop won’t have to be broken down at the end of the day. Also holiday shop will run tu-Friday so it wont interfere with the librarian.
Enrichment Update: Gwen Zink
Change of Simple did not get grant and its expensive possible that the school comitee may be able to help and possibly Ms. Maloney with the student activity fund for next year. It is a good program. We will see how the in house field trips go the rest of the year.
We are looking at other Enrichment programs we want to explore for the school year.

October 11, 2022
Principal's Message: Kristen Maloney
October Character Trait is Responsibility. The teachers will be looking for children to nominate in their classrooms.
WIN Blocks have started for the children. 3 days a week WINN block works for enrichment with assessments every 6-7 weeks.
· WIN Block staff: Sarah Stankard (Endicott College Masters' program fellow) and Elise Regan work with Katie Cedrone, our Content Specialists along with the 3 (or 4) teachers from each grade level to create small groups of grade level peers working on similar skills dictated by classroom performance and benchmark assessment results. The students are progress monitored throughout the 6-7 week WIN cycles for growth and WIN groups are edited as needed.
· Our new special ed paraprofessional is Shannon Teixeira. She'll start next week and work alongside our Special Ed teachers Mrs. Elin and Ms. Ballard, and our special ed paraprofessional Diane Cipro.
Wednesday Oct 26th is half day for parent teacher conferences

· Trick or Trek – to take place on Halloween at 1:30!
· Information will go out via email and paper form
· Prizes on desk after the trek for the kids. We will have a volunteer leave the prizes on the desks so the teachers wont have to.
Paul Scanlon:
Scholastic Book Fair- October 24th-28th in the library
Spirit Wear store: Paul got it up an running, Opening Nov 1st. first two weeks free shipping
- 4 Parent Volunteers for every time slot except for two.
· Sales tax now charged. Will not turn kids away if they don’t have enough. We will cover it.
· $200 will be used to make “gift cards” for kids to use who need it.
Secretary Report:
· The School Directory is about to be finalized and published within the week.
· 274 responses so far!
· Ms Maloney asked for classroom responses. She will reach out to teachers to spread the word to get the last few responses in.
Enrichment Update: Gwen Zink
Grant applied for Change of Simple both the mass cultural and Woburn cultural grant. We will know soon.
Power Surge: Science program for grades 3-5. Happening Thursday OCT 27th 1/130pm
We are looking at other Enrichment programs we want to explore for the school year.
Filed trip buses are about $500 each bus and classrooms get $1000 of field trip money. In house field trips may be more reasonable. Mrs. Connors is going to ask the teachers what programs they would like to see back
Grade K would love to see the Animals come back in the spring for an enrichment program.

· Welcome back to school! Already 9 days in!
· Character trait this month is RESPECT. Students will be selected for Respect Paws and a leader, one student per class, will be chosen to be put in the wildcat weekly and given a t-shirt for a reward
· Oct 6th is picture day
· Progress report will be sent out on the new system soon – information coming
· ALICE drill to be done soon – Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. Done with Woburn PD on Monday. Ms J and Ms Hannah children’s psychologists here as well to speak with kids after if needed.

· Presented the proposed budget and shared specific events that we use allocated funds.
The 2022-2023 PTO budget was voted on and approved for the upcoming year. Motion to approve by Ms Maloney and seconded by Meredith MacEachern.
Discussed possibly using venmo or Zelle for an easier way for fundraising

We are asking families to donate candy-non chocolate for the float this year. The donation can be used as YES hours for the children.

November Election Day at the Hurld Wyman Nov 8th
Bake Sale with Home made or store bought goodies to be provided by volunteers
Voting will be at the Hurld Wyman School and possibly at the old Wyman.
We will need volunteers to staff tables, collect money, make change, bring baked goodies etc.

Trick or Treat Trek
Date – Monday 10/31/22 – on HALLOWEEN! End of day 1:30-2pm
This is one of our major fundraisers for the school year. We need Parents to help with this event!
Children will receive prizes for participating which will be left on their desks after the trek
· Ideas for field trips and enrichments – more cost efficient to have enrichment come to the schools but ultimately field trips are chosen by the teachers. Maybe room parents and work with teachers to facilitate ideas for this year.

Change Is Simple Update: Ethan from change is simple. K-5 program to be returning to the school. Change is Simple is a program that comes into the classrooms and provides a STEM curriculum that teaches environmental, sustainability, and climate education to the students.
We are looking at other Enrichment programs we want to explore for the school year.

· Basketball hoop in playground is next to fence and we keep losing balls. Lost a lot of kickballs. Ms. Maloney said will take of care it.

Principal's Message: Kristen Maloney
Character Trait for May is Trustworthiness. The classroom teachers will be choosing the children in their class that have characteristics of this trait.
Last week of MCAS for 3rd and 4th grades.
The Chill Zone coolers idea from the Student Council were delivered last week. The coolers will have fidget toys, hand sanitizer and other items.
Received the indoor recess games from PTO. Teachers were very appreciative of the donation.
Teacher Appreciation was amazing and very well received by all. Thank you again for all the PTO did all week!
Spring Music Performance Thursday June 9th.
Field Day is Friday June 17th with rain date June 21st.
Fifth Grade moving on celebration Wednesday June 22nd.

Principal's Message: Kristen Maloney
· April character trait is Diligence. The classroom teachers will be choosing the children in their class that have characteristics of this trait.
· Thank you to PTO for Rainy Day outside activities. They will be used tomorrow for the children.
· Planting Day will Tuesday May 24th for children. The children can bring in one plant to plant in the planting areas around the school.
Memorial Day program on Friday May 27th. It will be in the outside in the afternoon.
Spring Music Performance Thursday June 9th.
Field Day is Friday June 17th with rain date June 21st.
Fifth Grade moving on celebration Wednesday June 22nd.
Official last day of school will be determined and posted tonight by the school committee.

Readathon - Results = $10,265.87 (net) ($10,663 -99pledges) + $2,439 in paper (Total= $12,704.87) 28,121 minutes recorded + near 40% participated. Winners top per classroom, extra recess = top 2 minutes + participation.

Field Day / Field Trip - T-Shirts have delivered to school. Parent volunteers will be needed for morning K-2 9-11 and afternoon 3-5 11-2.
Spring spirit wear-We are looking to have a year-round account open for next year.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week - (Courtney) - RP 2,219 + 3F
§ Volunteers have been planning activities for the week.
§ There will be an activity for each day for the teachers.
§ Things will be put in teacher’s mailboxes to be sent home with the children. They will have homework assignments that they can do at home to be sent back in.
Planting Day - May 24th –
§ We will send out a sign-up genius for volunteers to help during the day. PTO will be having a mulching day for the planting areas.
§ We will be reaching out to Bob Zwicker from MA Mulch. It was donated last year. We hope this will be done again. This will be done March 25th or March 26th.
End of Year Activities -
§ EOY Celebration we need to start thinking of a committee. Dafna Brown agreed to lead this committee.

Review Financials
§ Allison made a motion for additional $250.00 for PTO operations for end of the year books.
§ Additional $100.00 for 3-5 grade indoor recess items and $100.00 for Boys and Girls Club.
§ Additional $500.00 for Books for summer reading books.
§ Motion was seconded by Dafna Brown. No one opposed. Motion passed.
§ Allison made a motion to reallocate $750 and increase End of the Year Cookout and increase $250 Incoming Kindergarten Orientation and $500 to Garden Maintenance.

Tommy James anti bullying presentation for K-5th grades was on March 28 & 31st. Great performance and pictures were put on PTO Facebook page.

March 15, 2022
Principal's Message: Ms. Maloney
· March character trait is Courage. The classroom teachers will be choosing the children in their class that have characteristics of this trait.
· Early Release Day for Professional Development Day for Teachers- March 22nd
· Doing more outdoor recess with nice weather. Looking at budget for activities for children to do more sport related activities and activities for non-sports related children.
· Some of the Mitigation measures were lifted. Lockers are being used by children again. Children can be in pairs and small groups.
· Mrs. Farrell -Teacher Representative shared:
o Animals Adventures was AMAZING!! Thank you, PTO!!
§ Pictures from the day are on Mrs. Farrell’s Goggle Classroom and was shared with parents.
§ The woman who showed the children the animals was very informative and patient. She let the children touch the animals and ask questions. The animals were all rescue animals.
o The children have been happy to take masks off and see faces of everyone again. Some children still enjoyed being by themselves and being an “island”.
o Writer’s Workshop was able to be in small groups again. It was nice to be able to instruct and teach children.

Kindergarten and new families have asked about buying Spirit Wear.
§ Option for Online store called Spirit Wear Direct. Open for one year and parents can go on and buy HW Spirit Wear gear. Does not have the logo but has the HW name. We can add sayings if we want to. They also sell Woburn Tanners gear. PTO will get percentage back.
o PTO Venmo can be used but we have guidelines we need to follow:
§ Must be listed as a Donation.
§ Must be friends with the person that is contributing money. Otherwise, we must pay taxes on the money they are sending.
§ 9 room parents have forwarded $ for TAW. We have 9 more still need to send in money.

Thanks to parents for always supporting the PTO activities.
Income after budget adjustments: $30,000 revenue and to date $42,000 in revenue.
Expenses $40, 000. We had $14,000 in carry over from last year.

Principal's Message: Ms. Maloney
Character trait of the Month is Caring. Classroom teachers will be looking for children that have specific characteristics.
Four fifth grade students have been selected to perform in the treble chorus.
Lifting the mask mandate information will be in a special edition of the Wildcat Weekly after vacation.
Read Across America is March 2nd.
Fifth grade is having a visit from World Language Coordinator Mrs. Johnson on March 1st. Will be talking about options to learn Spanish or French at the middle schools.
School Counsel is meeting March 1st for a Spring outreach program. This would be to further improve the school inside or outside.

Principal's Message: Ms. Maloney
Character Trait is Fairness. Classroom teachers will be looking for children that have specific characteristics.
Classroom Teachers are finishing up their Winter Assessments for students. Will be ending January 28th. Dibbles and DRA Literacy Assessments and IXL Math assessments. Student Progress Reports go out the same day.
Parent Teacher Conferences are being held February 1st and 2nd.

We have a NEW Woburn Public School website. Director of Technology Jennifer Jenkins and the Fine Arts Director has put together a new user-friendly website. Each elementary school will be updated with new information.
School Improvement Plan has been created and approved by the school committee. Links for the plan will be in the Wildcat weekly.
Student Council met to discuss and create the HW school book.

· THANK YOU to Erin Dunphy and all of the volunteers that helped out all week!! We had about 24 volunteers in total. Paul sent out thank you emails to volunteers.
· Sales were over $7,300 and we earned $3,600 in scholastic bucks (Summer Reading) Will give teachers a summer reading list of books they can use to give to children. We used First Book in the past and we will review the list and what we can get.

Our Can Drive for the Woburn Council of Social Concern is currently happening. You can still bring in items until Friday November 19. Items will be going to Woburn Council of Social Concern.
New Bulletin Board in the front of the school “Light up the Season with Kindness” The HW is working with The Saint Anthony’s Club Toy’s for Tots program. The children can bring in a new unwrapped toy and write their name on a light bulb and place on the tree.
Welcome to Hurld Wyman book is going to be made by the new student council members. To give to new families and students coming into school.
Family Engagement Survey will be coming out after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Principal's Message: Kristen Maloney
October Character Trait is Responsibility. The teachers will be looking for children to nominate in their classrooms.
WIN Blocks have started for the children.
Progress Reports are going out Thursday October 21st
Wednesday October 27th is a half day ending at 12:30.
Conferences will start Wednesday October 27th in the afternoon and evening. Sign ups will be sent out by your homeroom teacher.
Veteran's Day event: Wednesday November 10th. Guest speaker and 3rd, 4th and 5 grades to perform poems. More details to follow.

5th Grade Parade Float
Theme this year is ‘Thank You Healthcare Workers’.
Thank you to children and families that have donated candy for the float this year. Donations can be used as YES hours for the children.
Decorating will be Friday, October 22nd after school.
Trick or Treat Trek
Friday October 29th- Rain date Thursday October 28th (details to follow)
Thank you to volunteers who have stepped up to put this event on.
We will be doing a small Halloween gift for each child. They will be given to teachers and to give to children at the end of the day.
We have decorations, Halloween inflatables for along the route, music and a fog machine!
We are well over our goal of $12,000!!! Thank you all for getting those pledges out!
Target gift cards will be raffled off for children who have participated.
Online fundraising open till November 12th.
November 2nd Election Day Bake Sale
We will be having the bake sale at the Hurld Wyman.
We will need volunteers to staff tables, collect money, make change, etc.
Will send out a sign-up for shifts (7am-7pm) Be on the lookout for a google form to sign up to help.
Each grade level will be assigned items by grade. $5 for bread, the rest is a chosen donation.
Holiday Shop
Thank you Nikki Thibault for volunteering to run the Holiday Shop again this year.
We will be using the literacy room and decorating beforehand. Reach out to Nikki if you would like to help.
