Ukulele

As part of our curriculum, 4th and 5th grade students are learning how to play the ukulele. We use soprano Makala MK-S ukuleles in class. If you would like to purchase a ukulele for your child I recommend a getting a soprano ukulele. There are many wonderful ukulele brands available. If it is not listed below, it does NOT mean it is a bad instrument! Trusted brands include Makala, Kala, Lanikai, and Cordoba. Almost any ukulele from these manufacturers will be a wonderful option for your child. Here are a few of my favorites, all available from Amazon. In addition, visiting your local music store may provide the opportunity for you to play the ukulele and purchase in person.

· Diamond Head DU-100 series - $30. These are great starter ukuleles, but take a little longer to settle “in tune.” If you replace the strings on these ukuleles with the Aquila strings, it greatly increases their sound quality.

· Makala Dolphin or Shark series - $50-$60. These are fantastic starter ukuleles and come with Aquila strings. They have a wonderful sound and have proven to be sturdy and quickly settle in tune.

· Kala Waterman Ukulele $40-$50. These are great starter ukuleles, but are made of plastic. They are wonderful for durability and sound pretty good despite the plastic. If you are worried about breaking the ukulele, these are a great option.
