What is a Humpback Whale?
As one of the largest mammals on earth, this baleen whale can grow up to 15 meters and weigh over 60,000 pounds! They are most commonly known for their unique songs and iconic hump on their back that breeches when they are diving. These whales inhabit the world's major oceans including the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. They are migratory, traveling up to 5,000 miles between their summer feeding grounds and their winter mating and calving areas. (Clapham, 2000)

A distinctive characteristic of the humpback whale is its unusual feeding habits. Humans' effects on oceanic animals can be further realized through analyzing the feeding habits, natural history, and current behavioral habits of humpback whales (Wiley et al., 2011). The humpback whale has several unique feeding habits such as lunge feeding, bubble-net feeding, and bottom feeding which can all be explored in this website.
This will be analyzed through Tinbergen's four questions :
--How did the behavior develop? --What mechanism cause it to be performed?
--How did the behavior evolve? --Why is it being performed?
