Kim Nguyen the director of The Hummingbird Project, had a number of motives involved with the creation of the movie. He both hoped to educate people more on how the stock market works and how there is never a win-win situation. In the film, this is portrayed through Anton's meeting with the waitress and the analogy of the lemon farmers. In the film, he explains his job to the waitress through the purchase of shares of a lemon farm. When she asks how this affects the farmer, Anton responds saying that they are irrelevant. From here, the waitress argues that this involves them as they are the working class, and Anton realizes that not everyone benefits from high frequency trading.
