I am Professor of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Affiliated Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), and a researcher at the Institute for Political Economy and Governance (IPEG) and UPF's Center for Studies on Planetary Wellbeing. My research uses economic theory, especially social choice, welfare economics and formal political economy, to study how societies should and do make collective decisions. Topics include sustainable growth and intergenerational justice under climate change, and the redistributive effects of progressive taxation and electoral competition. My work has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Theoretical Economics, the European Economic Review and AEJ: Microeconomics, among others. With John E. Roemer and Joaquim Silvestre I co-authored Sustainability for a Warming Planet (Harvard University Press, 2015), which won the 10th Catalan Economic Society Award. I have also advised the United Nations Development Programme.
I hold a PhD in Economics from UC Davis and have been a visiting professor at Yale University and the Grantham Research Institute (LSE), and a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. I care deeply about teaching. I serve as UPF's Rector's Delegate for Teaching Innovation, sit on the CORE Econ editorial board and edit Experiencing Economics. In 2012 I received the Jaume Vicens Vives distinction for teaching quality and innovation.
