February is celebrated as Black History Month (also known as African-American History Month) since the American Civil Rights Movement in the mid-1950s, an offshoot of what started as Negro History Week in 1926 by American historian Carter G. Woodson. And, The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity is the theme for 2021. We take a look at the ‘black’ actors in Hollywood...
Black Panther’s no more
Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman received four nominations for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (his last film, released posthumously). Detected with colon cancer in 2016, Chadwick kept his condition private and continued to act until his death in August 20. The long-held dream of African-Americans to have a ‘black’ superhero film was answered when Chadwick essayed the character of Black Panther in a movie by the same name.
The prince
Will Smith
Will Smith started as the MC of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, dropping the single, Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble, but his popularity grew with NBC television series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six season (till 1996) and in the meantime he went on to star in movies — Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and Bad Boys (1995). Will as the Black agent (Agent J) of Men In Black, also made quite a mark.
Dark knight, indeed
Morgan Freeman
He has appeared in films such as Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, The Shawshank Redemption and The Dark Knight Trilogy, and enjoys both critical and popular acclaim. One of the Hollywood’s most respected actors, Morgan’s turning point from serving in the military to becoming an actor was boosted by a big break he got in all African-American Broadway production, Hello, Dolly! Playing a God comes naturally to him and hence the comedy movies, Bruce Almighty and its sequel Evan Almighty, were all about his vigorous voice and stellar screen presence.
Big blow
Cicely Tyson
Cicely Tyson’s demise on January 28, 2021, had left Hollywood mourning. A pioneering ‘black’ actress, Cicely won the Tony Award in 2013 at the age of 88. In her memoir, posted a week after her death, she writes, “My art had to both mirror the times and propel them forward… I was determined to do all I could to alter the narrative about black people.”
Influential enough
Viola Davis
She wears the triple crown of acting — having won an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and two Tony Awards; the first African-American to do so. The strong, bold and unapologetic Annalise Keating of How To Get Away with Murder, Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, she was nominated for Golden Globes 2021 for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Motion Picture for the movie Black Bottom. And who can forget American period drama, Fences, which revolves around opportunities missed because of racism, which won her the Oscar for Best Supporting actress!
Pure genius
Angela Bassett
Despite never having won an Academy Award, though being nominated, Angela Bassett is known for her biographical roles. She has shone on screen, be it as the civil rights activist in The Rosa Park Story or the matriarch in The Jackson Family: An American Dream or the agent in Mission: Impossible Fallout. Part of Panther (1995), she also starred in Black Panther (2018).

I
Among twenty snowy mountains,
The only moving thing
Was the eye of the blackbird.
II
I was of three minds,
Like a tree
In which there are three blackbirds.
III
The blackbird whirled in the autumn winds.
It was a small part of the pantomime.
IV
A man and a woman
Are one.
A man and a woman and a blackbird
Are one.
V
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.
VI
Icicles filled the long window
With barbaric glass.
The shadow of the blackbird
Crossed it, to and fro.
The mood
Traced in the shadow
An indecipherable cause.
VII
O thin men of Haddam,
Why do you imagine golden birds?
Do you not see how the blackbird
Walks around the feet
Of the women about you?
VIII
I know noble accents
And lucid, inescapable rhythms;
But I know, too,
That the blackbird is involved
In what I know.
IX
When the blackbird flew out of sight,
It marked the edge
Of one of many circles.
X
At the sight of blackbirds
Flying in a green light,
Even the bawds of euphony
Would cry out sharply.
XI
He rode over Connecticut
In a glass coach.
Once, a fear pierced him,
In that he mistook
The shadow of his equipage
For blackbirds.
XII
The river is moving.
The blackbird must be flying.
XIII
It was evening all afternoon.
It was snowing
And it was going to snow.
The blackbird sat
In the cedar-limbs.

In ‘An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness’, Chinua Achebe, the Nigerian novelist, not only condescends Conrad’s tacit literary white supremacy in his novel, Heart of Darkness, but also voices the fragility of such limited knowledge, willed ignorance or lack of cultural exposure in volition, in informing the cracks of racism in darkness. Dark indeed, that which is not a result of lack of light, literally, but the metaphorical illumination of first-hand experience of such a setting that Conrad, allegedly, ignorantly sets his novel in. Conrad learnt English much later in life, late enough by usual standards of mastery of the imperial tongue, for a literary career in his thirties, and produced novels such as Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Almayer’s Folly and The Nigger of the Narcissus among others, established himself as an author studied and read widely in the West. He is accused of pitting his European mis-expectations of cultural standards of “language” and education of the black in his novel, against the Africa that he holds up, which is only an “image” of Africa, that too a racist one, as Achebe argues in his lecture. Achebe, while foraying into his main argument against such ignorance, refers to his actual experiences of dealing with white ignorance of African cultural rituals and customs that pre-dominate Achebe’s works, most notedly Things Fall Apart, in real life conversations and correspondences.

When it is finally ours, this freedom, this liberty, this beautiful
and terrible thing, needful to man as air,
usable as earth; when it belongs at last to all,
when it is truly instinct, brain matter, diastole, systole,
reflex action; when it is finally won; when it is more
than the gaudy mumbo jumbo of politicians:
this man, this Douglass, this former slave, this Negro
beaten to his knees, exiled, visioning a world
where none is lonely, none hunted, alien,
this man, superb in love and logic, this man
shall be remembered. Oh, not with statues’ rhetoric,
not with legends and poems and wreaths of bronze alone,
but with the lives grown out of his life, the lives
fleshing his dream of the beautiful, needful thing.

As the Black History Month approaches next month, here's Nikki Giovanni's poem that breathes humanity into nature its last word.
By Nikki Giovanni
If Black History Month is not
viable then wind does not
carry the seeds and drop them
on fertile ground
rain does not
dampen the land
and encourage the seeds
to root
sun does not
warm the earth
and kiss the seedlings
and tell them plain:
You’re As Good As Anybody Else
You’ve Got A Place Here, Too

MLK/FBI
The 58th New York Film Festival is screening MLK/FBI this week, thrice this month: one in-house and two virtual screenings. MLK/FBI is the first to bring the records of Federal Bureau of Investigations' involvement in Martin Luther King's assassination in April 1968, to the public, while they remain sealed in the National Archives. King's murder was an instance of intolerance, suppression and silencing of racial justice struggles in the world.

the black subjugated attitude; presupposes humanity without blackness as the source of oppression.
18th September 2020
Education is not enough. Emancipation remains a myth.
A black born is a slave without license to be free, happy and lead a life he wishes. A black cannot have a profession other than slavery. Tricked into slavery and smuggled to the cotton plantations in the South, Northup Solomon trades his youth, sanity, health and well-being to return home twelve years later, chained in the experience of slavery that he fails to avenge on those who brought it upon him. His knowledge of the hardships of slavery is braced in the songs that are chanted, repeated and sung occasionally on and off the work sites. He wreaths in the pain of his incapacity to garner help for his return home, education that saw him cultivated, refined and the barbaric oppression that he had been subjected to for twelve years, for no fault of his own, other than his colour, which he could not change; neither would he, had he been able to.
