This site provides examples of instructional resources created in the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, a professional development program funded by the California Education Learning Lab and administered by the Foothill DeAnza Community College District.
At the start of this program I was already aware of equity gaps, but I didn't consider how those would interact with the online learning experience. I learned during the course how equity gaps for online courses may differ from in-person classes, or even be amplified compared to in-person classes. Imposter syndrome, stereotype threat, and belongingness uncertainty can all be amplified by remote learning. I learned in this class some important strategies for reducing equity gaps in the online learning environment.
Before the course, I was tempted to add more humanized content to my courses, but I was unsure how that content would be received by students or even by other faculty. I was relieved to learn during the course that students respond positively towards humanized content added to online courses. It was also affirming to learn that students respond positively to an active instructor presence characterized by kindness and empathy.
I now feel more aware of equity gaps and the utility of adding humanized content especially as these pertain to the online learning experience.
I have not only learned about the need to address equity gaps and add humanized content, but I also gained a set of course content creation tools. I am now poised to incorporate my new knowledge using these new tools for thoroughly updating my online course materials. I also feel emboldened to continue learning new technologies and approaches for humanizing the online STEM environment.
I like the idea of using the liquid syllabus to reach out to students before the course starts. I also like the idea of using the liquid syllabus to set a welcoming tone early on for the course.
I like this image because it demonstrates inclusiveness. It also relates to course themes such as stewardship. Plants are good too 😀.
This homepage serves as a kindness cue of social inclusion for students. It sends a warm welcome with an instructor photo, instructor contact information, and a bumper video describing how to avoid a common pitfall.
This survey serves as a kindness cue of social inclusion for students. It demonstrates to students that the instructor acknowledges and appreciates student diversity. It shows the instructor understands that students face real life challenges that impact their learning and the instructor shows the willingness to help students be successful.
This Wisdom Wall fosters a sense of belonging by connecting students with each others' real-world experiences. I think it is a great concept. I know from personal experience that students value each others' advice about how to succeed in their courses. This is a great way to allow that to occur in an online learning environment.
This video fits into the course by providing key advice for studying. A lot of students don't know how to study the material and make the same mistake. This video provides the opportunity to advise them to avoid this common mistake and channel their study habits in a more productive way.
This mini lecture covers some introductory material which is part of the first class meeting. It challenges students to define life and list the characteristics that differentiate living things from non-living things.
