The assignments in this course include:
Discussions: You will be asked to reflect on course content and your personal experiences in discussion posts. You are expected to respond to the prompt fully and engage in robust back-and-forth discussions with multiple peers. These are graded as complete/incomplete because I prioritize providing feedback over worrying about points.
Learner Persona Assignment: You will conduct learner analysis and develop a learner persona to support you in designing for different types of learners. Your assignment will be peer-reviewed, and you will also review two peers’ personas.
UDL Lesson Plan Assignment: You will craft a plan for an online lesson that demonstrates the three UDL guidelines. You will explain how your lesson plan employs UDL to support diverse learners. Your assignment will be peer-reviewed and you will also review two peers’ lesson plans.
Accessibility Remediation Activity: You will review a sample online course and identify multiple violations of technical accessibility standards. You will propose solutions for each of these accessibility issues.
Final Project: You will use what you learned in creating the Learner Persona, UDL Lesson Plan, and Accessibility Remediation assignments to support you in the Final Project. You will create an online lesson in Canvas or another platform of your choice that exemplifies best practices for humanizing design.
Final Reflection: You will write or record a short reflection that explains how your Final Project considers diverse learner personas, implements the UDL guidelines, and meets WCAG accessibility standards. You will reflect on your experience, awareness, work, and practice.
The course also includes ungraded Knowledge Checks, Short Reflections, and Wikis. You will be asked to complete knowledge checks and reflections to help you determine whether you have developed the knowledge and skills needed to move on and be successful in the course. Knowledge checks are ungraded and provide automatic feedback. You have unlimited attempts on the knowledge checks. Short reflections are ungraded but I will read and respond to them. You will also be asked to contribute to wikis in the form of Google Docs to build knowledge with your classmates. These are ungraded as well, but engaging will help create higher-quality materials for everyone.
Another ungraded, but highly recommended, activity is the Module Feedback Form embedded onto each Module Review page. In accordance with inclusive design principles, I am trying to gather as much feedback from as many perspectives as possible to inform a future redesign of the course. Please complete the feedback form after completing each module to provide me with suggestions for how the course can be improved. This activity will also help you hone your design skills.
Due dates are mainly for your benefit. Please reach out to me if you will not be able to make a due date, and we will find a solution. I do not anticipate penalizing late work, but I may not be able to provide useful feedback if you miss a deadline. Additionally, late participation is detrimental to the quality of class discussions and peer reviews, so please try to submit your work on time.
