One of the most valuable things I learned at a workshop, from a now dear friend, is that we need to be a little bit goofy; to show kids that we are human just as they are. Thanks for sharing your story!

I look forward to reading your blog posts. As a new teacher they provide me with guidance, inspiration and moments of laughter. The classroom should be a place where we can be ourselves. Be goofy at times and show our students that we are human. For some of these kids, a lot of mine for sure, we are the person they enjoy seeing every day or they can talk to.

Thank you for this. I do my best to live by these words in my professional life as an educator: Remember Joy. Stay the Course. There are so many joy crushing elements of public education these days and when these get me down, I remind myself Im working with small humans who deserve joyful moments at school. Thanks for knowing that this truth is just as important as any research-based instructional strategies.

This story caught me off guard today. I did not know Debra personally, but she taught some of my former students from middle school, and it was from them that I learned what happened. Your story and hers remind me that we are not teaching a subject, we are teaching people, and if we are teaching people, we must show up in a human way and allow for those times of joy or sadness to be expressed. Thank you for that reminder!

I really look forward to, and appreciate your posts every week.

Your personal voice and experiences make your well researched posts more enjoyable for me. Reading strictly academic write ups is tiresome. The human touch makes your work a lot more digestible.

Your story reminds me of how my brain is working in my classes (I teach High school), I once tolled my students that in my mind I hear sound effects when I am teaching, this made them laugh but it also made them feel comfortable in my class. I truly enjoy how you explained that laughter is very important. Awesome story!

I think this is a great reminder of how if our students see us as flawed and human we can reach them even more than we ever thought. I really enjoy all of your ideas and writing topics. This one just touched me a bit more.

Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

I love this! Thank you so much for sharing and making me laugh out loud so unexpectedly. It was such a timely reminder not to take myself,my classes and life so seriously and focus more on the human connections.

Most gas passed during flatulence goes unnoticed because there isn't a smell. It may contain odorless gases, such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane, but a small portion includes hydrogen sulfide, which causes it smell like rotten eggs. Think of hydrogen sulfide as the waste of the microbes helping you digest the indigestible. Then, there are other factors contributing to smelly farts, including compounds that are byproducts from meat digested, and whether there is feces present in the rectum when flatulence occurs.

In a previous post, we suggested that high frequencies are also important for understanding fart sounds, since they seem to be amplified by the opening and closing of the external sphincter. As noted in our previous report, farting is in this regard similar to shouting through the anus.

A review of research on speech indicates the surprising finding that speech sounds often extend even to the ultrasonic range. These are frequencies beyond the range of normal human hearing, which in adults has an upper limit of about 16 kHz. Higher frequencies can be heard by children, as well as animals like bats and dolphins, which use ultrasonic frequencies to communicate.

Most of the power in the waveform is contained in the lower frequencies, but from the spectrogram below, it can be seen that moments of high sound amplitude generate broadband frequency spectra that extend well beyond 16 kHz (dashed lines).

Given that farts have peak frequencies around 250 Hz, we can predict that they will also have power at odd-harmonic frequencies near 750 Hz and 1250 Hz. Here is the average power spectrum of 356 farts:

It was at this point that the team named the noise Fast Repetitive Tick (FRT). But Wilson points that, unlike a human fart, the sounds are probably not caused by digestive gases because the number of sounds does not change when the fish are fed.

Secondly, the herring are only noisy after dark, indicating that the sounds might allow the fish to locate one another when they cannot be seen. Thirdly, the biologists know that herrings can hear sounds of this frequency, while most fish cannot. This would allow them to communicate by FRT without alerting predators to their presence.

The research team identified nearly 1,000 species of fish that produce sound, and there are likely more, Cox said, adding new research or recordings that surface on different fish can be added to the FishSounds online database.

The plainfin midshipman is another species found along the southern half of the B.C. coast that is especially popular with researchers studying soniferous fish because of its variety of distinct sounds, he added.

Erica Cirino is a writer, artist and researcher who works globally. While on assignments in places as far-off as the South Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Circle, she covers science stories that often meet at the intersection of human and wildlife health, and environmental conservation. In particular, Erica is highly focused on uncovering the depths and health effects of the global plastic pollution crisis.

Typically, the anus releases extra gas from the rectum without any stool releasing. However, when a person makes a wet fart, there is some kind of fluid or mucus present in the rectum that is either released with the gas or makes additional noise when the gas is passed.

Sometimes when a person is sick from a bacteria or virus affecting their stomach, food may pass through the digestive system very quickly and come out as watery stool (diarrhea). When a person passes gas, the watery stool can cause a wet fart.

For an older child, wet farts can be less common and so are more likely to indicate one of the conditions listed above. This can include possible infection, problems digesting certain foods, or difficulty with a new medication.

Lactose- and gluten-containing foods are two examples of foods known to cause stomach irritation. However, there are many more foods, drinks, and spices that can lead to stomach upset and that might contribute to wet farts. Keep a food diary to figure out what foods cause you digestive issues.

Occasional wet farts are to be expected. They usually indicate gastrointestinal upset. But if wet farts continue to occur on a chronic basis, you should talk to your doctor about potential treatments.

The most common cause of excessive gas in dogs is diet. While trying new food can occasionally lead to a fart, chronic gas often results from poorly digested food, causing excessive fermentation in the small intestine.

Dog farts consist of 99% odorless gases, while the remaining 1% contains sulfur-producing, odorous gases. A diet rich in sulfur leads bacteria in the gut to produce more sulfides, making farts smellier. Consuming nuts, spices, cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts), and high-protein ingredients often amplifies the production of these smelly gases.

Ancalle, a mechanical engineering student at Georgia Tech who researches fluid dynamics, is currently working to demystify the acoustics of urination, flatulence, and diarrhea. His team is training AI to recognize and analyze the sound of each bathroom phenomenon; in fact, research suggests that tracking the flow of our excretions could benefit public health.

The team is also exploring the fundamental physics at play. In the conference presentation, Ancalle described how the team modeled the sound of male urination (streams turning into droplets that splash in succession.)

If the geometry of the urethra changes, so do the stream and the sound. Now, Ancalle is working with urologists to use the same machine-learning approach to detect irregular changes in urination and flatulence based on this idea. 2351a5e196
