Hi, I’m Huiqian Song, and I also go by Louise. (Huiqian sounds roughly like “hway-chyen.”) I’m an assistant professor at Kyoto University’s Institute of Economic Research (KIER), and I earned my Ph.D. in economics from Simon Fraser University.

I tend to find economic puzzles in books, on the road, and in everyday life. Once a question gets stuck in my head, I try some theory, look for data (the older stuff is often just as useful), and drink far too much coffee and tea along the way.

Different projects, same puzzle. I keep coming back to laws, property rights, and the institutions quietly running the show. I want to know how those rules came to be and how they shape the way economies develop. And when the rules change, who comes out ahead?
