  • This video was posted to YouTube on July 6th, 2015 by NJ Spotlight News and cover a couple topics such as the water conditions and why it could make you sick, what flows in the water, and ways to help decrease pollution from entering the water. [6]

  • The time period in which this video was posted the water of the Hudson River was toxic in more areas than it is today. [6]

  • In the beginning of the video two girls are asked if they go swimming in the river and if they would consider it. Both answered "no". [6]

  • Samples from the water did not pass the safe swimming guidelines. [6]

  • The water during this time contained a lot of sewage and even fecal matter which could make you sick alsmost instantly after you enter the water. [6]

  • Dan Shapley, the Water Quality Program Manager from Hudson RIverkeeper stated, "River wide at certain times in certain locations and it varies quite a bit from location to location we can have very poor water quality and so that's what we really want to work on". This means that certain parts of the water can have poor water quality at any given moment and then be better a couple days later with a different spot becoming worse. [6]

  • Shapley says that many people swim in the water because to them, it is their beach, and a lot of them don't have the means to go away for vacation. [6]

  • The pollution can be stopped by picking up trash off of the streets so it doesn't flow into the sewers during a storm and not flushing anything down the toilet other than toilet paper. [6]
