With this post, I wanted to take a test to see how the Huawei P20 Pro behaves against a good mirrorless camera on low light shooting condition. The Fujifilm X-Pro 2 is one my main camera (together with the X-T2) and is well known for excellent image quality in low light despite using an APS-C sensor and not a full frame.

Then, I set f/ 1.8 aperture on the Fuji lens to match the same lens aperture on the Huawei P20 Pro. I then performed the exposure in the Pro mode on the Huawei smartphone: in this way, I could set the exact same exposure on both the devices.

Note: It was curious to see that in some photos, setting the exposure values that was shown as correct on Huawei metering, led to a slightly underexposed photo on the Fujifilm camera.

As a general analysis, it can be seen that the Huawei P20 Pro, in situations of low light and with strong contrasts between lights and shadows, behaves very well and approaches the quality of a mirrorless camera.

As a final consideration, we can say that the mirrorless cameras are still in a safe territory for the general quality of photos shot on low light, but the smartphones are getting much closer.

The countdown function of Huawei Smart Light Bulb intelligently selects the timing based on the switch of the light. It selects when to turn on the countdown or turn off the countdown which is very convenient.

From the entertainment mode, you can change the color of the light bulb according to the different rhythm of the music and also to different scenes. Colors can be set analyzing the harmonious unity of sound and light, and will not appear abrupt. This feature can be of great use if you are having a dinner date with someone special or just having party at home.

Lifestyle mode is entirely different from the entertainment mode. This mode can be optimize for daily life scenes, such as work and reading. You can adjust the brightness and color temperature of the light bulb according to your requirement.

For example, when lighting get adjusts with the white light, it will make people calmer. While using warm light can be used to make people feel tired, let people fall asleep quickly.

Low-light photography is one area the where the P20 Pro and P20 promised to bring great improvements. On the P20 Pro this is largely achieved through the ability of the sensor to do pixel binning and thus combine 2x2, meaning four, physical pixels into a single logical pixel. In theory this improves light sensitivity of the sensor by 4x and equivalent to a sensor with 2m pixel pitches, which would make it by far the most sensitive sensor in smartphones.

Below is an image of a laptop sitting on a bed. The only light in the scene is a MacBook and an iPhone, so there's not a whole lot to work with here. As you can see, the AI-assisted image has a lot less noise, but it also emphasizes some artifacts. Nonetheless, there's a clear winner here.

What I love about the Mate 10 Pro is how sharp it is compared to other smartphones in similar light conditions. While it's frustratingly difficult to tell what's going on under the hood, this is pretty clearly related to their touted intelligent sharpening. While I'm not a fan of the de-noising, nor the "beautifying" filter (which feels like de-noising your face), in most cases this isn't overdone.

[Barcelona, Spain, February 28, 2022] At this year's MWC Barcelona, Huawei meets with global operators, industry partners, and thought leaders for discussions on topics including 5G business success, green technology, connectivity + IT for new growth, and their GUIDE business blueprint, with a focus on business and social value, to light up a bright future of digital economy.

Huawei piled on the photo settings, which makes the native camera app a little confusing, but photography buffs will find what they need and then some: Pro mode, super slow motion video, extra lighting options for portrait photos on both front and rear cameras, and predictive focus.

Night Mode is a separate setting that combines a multitude of shots taken behind the scenes over the course of 4 seconds into one shot that's consistently bright and colorful even in low light -- more so than photos taken at night in the automatic mode.

I took test shots on both P20 phones: indoors, outdoors, portrait and low light. I expected the P20 Pro pictures to blow the P20 out of the water, but they didn't always. Instead, depending on the lighting and the scene, they swapped roles.

For example, the P20 Pro showed much more detail and texture when we zoomed all the way into the picture of a portrait on the same laptop screen. But it was the regular P20 that produced warmer and better exposed images of an indoor shot of a shuffleboard, which had mixed lighting, and we preferred the detail and warmth in a portrait mode photo of my coworker and his tie-dyed hat.

The biggest surprise of all was when I used the P20 and P20 Pro's portrait lighting mode in Classic Lighting (kind of like a black and white spotlight shot). In two different locations, the P20 rendered my eyes in grayscale.

All recent Huawei devices ship with a security hypervisor, a defense-in-depth measure designed to enhance kernel security. Unlike other OEMs, Huawei encrypts this privileged piece of software, hence why it has received little to no public scrutiny. With this blog post, we aim to cast light on its inner-workings and provide an in-depth analysis of its implementation, from its entry point to the functions dedicated to protecting the kernel at runtime.

The /vendor/bin/hw/vendor.huawei.hardware.sop@1.0-service system service is responsible for loading the encrypted shared libraries into user memory from disk when it is started. The loading flow is as follows:

In the video below above, you'll see that the P20 Pro managed to produce a well-lit, clear image shooting in a dark kitchen inside my apartment with no lights on and minimal natural lighting. And in the photos below, notice how the P20 Pro's images (all shot using the long exposure mode) are noticeably brighter than competitors.

The P20 Pro has some glaring flaws and annoyances: the phone comes with two bloatware apps that can't be uninstalled (eBay and Booking.com); there's a major camera hump; selfies can turn people into plastic looking zombies; and the aforementioned outdated chin and slightly garish EMUI software.

But the above things don't matter that much (since Nova Launcher can hide much of the software flaws). The four most crucial areas of a smartphone to consumers today are: camera performance, display brilliance, battery life, and smooth performance. Of these four, the P20 Pro is absolutely the best in two -- battery life and low light camera performance -- while giving very good -- if not quite the best -- showings in the other two areas too (display and performance smoothness).

Thanks for the help. I'll try to open my phone. I was looking through the instructions that I got with my phone. It suggested not to open the back of your phone by yourself. I plug it into my computer and the light turned green then orange once again.

One of the coolest features of your HUAWEI device camera is its dedicated light painting mode. Light painting is a photographic technique that uses moving light sources and long exposure times either to illuminate a scene or to add new elements within the photo.

The light painting mode offered by HUAWEI automatically sets a slow shutter speed and adjusts the aperture, so you don't have to manually modify any setting. Depending on the subject and the lighting conditions, you can capture light trails or create light graffiti, for awesome photos everyone will envy you for.

Light graffiti allows you to draw different shapes or even write words by moving a light source in front of the camera.

Find a dark environment, without any distracting light sources and make sure the subject's silhouette is not visible; if you want to capture the subject as well, activate the flash.

For best results, we recommend placing the device on a tripod or a solid surface so that it does not move during the shooting. Then choose an appropriate light source, like a small flashlight or a glowing stick and move it in front of the camera.

With Traffic trails, you can shoot artistic photos of car lights at night. Find a spot where you can see the traffic; make sure the headlights of the cars do not face the camera directly, as this can cause overexposure.

For best results, we recommend using a tripod to reduce the camera movement during the shooting.

With Star trails you can capture the movement of the stars on the night sky. For best results, use this mode on a clear night, in a location free of light pollution and with an unobstructed view of the sky. Also, use a tripod to reduce the camera movement.

Hold the phone steady and tap to start shooting. Check the result in the viewfinder and, when you are done, touch to stop shooting.

The Aperture mode is also interesting functionality, that could be considered a more serious (non-selfie) portrait mode. It has a simulated bokeh/background separation effect by changing the faux aperture. This works well, but can result in slightly soft subjects. It can work with non-human subjects too.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is also great for handheld night/low light photography using Night mode. This uses image stacking and AI stabilisation to allow for handheld night photos with less noise. During the test shots, the exposure time varied between 3 and 7 seconds, ISO400 to 1600 depending on the scene. The apertures are fixed wide open. A steady hand results in better shots, and I found about 1 in 3 photos were sharp. Whilst noise reduction is heavy handed, metering is again excellent, and in my opinion, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro slightly bettered the best results that I could obtain using my APS-C DSLR!

For tripod based long exposures at night, the phone is no match for results obtainable from ILCs. Due to the fixed wide apertures, it is not possible to render starburst as well as on ILCs. However lights and other bright objects are still rendered reasonably well compared to earlier generation smart phone cameras. Lens flare is well controlled. 17dc91bb1f
