PROJECT 2 SCRIPT
Introduction:
Hey guys! I am Madison Grooms, a freshman student at the College Of Coastal Georgia. The topic being talked about today is " The Oppression Of Women: Job Opportunity." This topic is related to me and many women around the world, and how Men and Women view society, especially for women trying to find a job. As a women in college, finding a job and interacting with a discussion study such as mine is known to open to many view points on the American society. Oppression of Women has always been present in the world, but I am taking my main focus on the Oppression of Women in Job Opportunities, and how difficult it is for a women to get a job. Through the years, this has enhanced, yet it has not been suppressed. Discussing these researches and studies, and how they have maintained throughout the years. Included are many researches, studies, journals and statistical facts on the oppression of women in the workforce and how they are treated differently when trying to get a job.
Body:
Finding out if you're one of the many women that have to deal with oppression in the workforce is not so difficult, but if you find it difficult, Mohamad G. Alkadry and Leslie, Tower wrote an article called " Women and Public Service: Barriers, Challenges, and Opportunities." These authors wrote this hoping women around the world could change the inequality in a job setting. " Men vs Women." The authors talk about how men and women should be associates, yet men have other things in mind. There are many disadvantages in being a Woman in the workforce but many Men believe that women should not be working. In the article, the authors content " Social Cost of Career" is speaking on women getting job opportunities and that women have to steadily focus on keeping their job due to men not believing that they should be working. Overall, this article gives proven explanations as to why Men are more effective in the workforce, pushing women aside.
In another article I have read " Job Characteristics, Stereotypes, and Perceived Gender Discrimination in the Workplace" by William E. Snizek; Cecily. C Neil. In this article, the authors talk about how women in the workforce are discriminated because of their gender. Many Men believe that they are more capable than a women. The authors statistically state " 37 to 41 percent of women surveyed stated that they regularly experienced or promotional day-to-day discriminations." They surveyed these women because they inspected on how many women get discriminated due to their gender in their line of work. Women should not have to go through this at their workplace.
If you are a women in the workforce, and you have been harassed at work by a man, this article by Maleehah Gull "Glass Ceiling and Women Harassment at Workplace" would be interesting to you. In this article, Gull goes on about how men treat women in the workforce. She writes about how many in women in a male dominated workplace feel like they have no rights; Women have no freedom to speak on how they feel, and if they do so they will fear the reaction of men. Men think of women as objects, nothing more; Especially in a male dominated company. There needs to be a change in " Male-Commanding Organizations" or nothing will change with the inequality of women and men in the workplace.
Now let me get you into some real views on why men think they are more capable then women. In the research journal " Importance Women Workforce Participation in Urban and Rural India and Its Contribution in Economic Development" by Dr. Ratnesh Chandra Sharma Stanley, he began a research to see why there were few women in the workforce. Statistically he finds that there is a decrease of women in the workforce due to marriage relations, religion, and men feeling dominant. Many men in urban and rural areas believe that women should be a stay-at-home-spouse to do the cleaning, cooking and handle child care, with low income or none at all. Reading into this research journal, it gives an outreach beyond America, statistical research and an understanding on why men believe that women should not be working.
In another article by Justin, Healey " Gender Discriminations and Inequality," he talks about how a lot of women are improving in the workforce, getting the fair equality women need, yet women in Australia are doing just the opposite. In Australia, women are struggling to find equality like some women around the world. Healey says " Australian women continue to earn less then men, are less likely to advance in their careers, and more likely to spend their life in poverty." Women in Australia probably feel less needed due to men dominance, and/or day-to-day activities. Australian women do not have to live their life in poverty, with much support, they can be just as wealthy and intelligent as the Australian men.
Reading on women, and seeing the inequality is hard, but reading this article " Gendered Inequalities in the Workplace Revisited: Masculinist Dominance, Institutionalized Sexism, and Assaultive Behavior.." by Jerome Deggans. In this article Deggans not only talks about women being harassed in the workforce but also being treated differently, and shows statistical evidence. Jerome states " Women to be denied professional opportunities because men are reluctant to work with them/men being falsely accused of sexual assault and harassment/the punishment for less-serious forms of sexual assault or harassment." In reading about what Jerome has to say, it is hard to see that women lose their jobs, promotions, or even opportunities that provide for their families for the better. Women are turned down in the workforce because men are to ignorant to let women have the equal fairness.
Conclusion:
My main take away was to let not only men and women see view points from a women, but also from men. To let everyone view the society we live in today. In todays society we have improved on equal rights in the workforce, but not everywhere has been equivalent. Still many women beyond America struggle with having the equal rights. I am not sure if it will ever change, but reading through many studies of researches, articles and journals, it gives an insight on women all over the world that deal with similar obstacles in the workforce. Women deserve to have equal rights, just as a man does.
To conclude this podcast, I hope you enjoyed some of the multiple ways that women can be of greater use in the workforce. If you or anyone that you have seen go through these difficult obstacles as a women, please feel free to reach out and let me hear your point of view, or share my research findings with a friend or two! Thank you for listening!
