During my graduate school years I indulged myself to create this dataset—based on archival and secondary sources in Russian, Ukrainian, Estonian, and English—that tracks the careers of 789 Soviet sociologists across 15,065 person-years during 1958-1987, a key formative period for state socialism and world history. It enables research on organizations and occupations, science and technology, knowledge production, and political economy the USSR and much beyond.
Unit of analysis: person-year
Key variables: name/ID, year, duration in dataset, purge and rehabilitation events, age, gender, highest education, socialization-based cohort, birth cohort, research subfield, undergraduate institution.
I'm actively expanding this database and developing new projects based on it. For collaboration inquiries, please contact Hsu Huang (hsu_huang@brown.edu).
